The Avengers Xian product placement

So the other day I went to see The Avengers at a nearby movie theater. It was a great movie with an amazing cast but one particular scene was almost vomit-inducing. As Captain America was about to confront the gods Loki and Thor, Black Widow informed him to be careful because they were powerful gods. In response, Captain America stated something like "There is only one god ma'am, and I doubt he dresses like those two". Upon hearing that statement, several people in the theater applauded and cheered (as I cringed). Needless to say, I believe I have came to the point where just the slightest Jeezus reference makes me want to barf.

I think we can get over-sensitive. Not that it isn't understandable, given the country we live in.

I think the line was campy nonsense that fit the old-fashioned, corn-fed Cap'n America character pretty well. I thought it was funny. Actually, I applaud them for leaving it in instead of going the PC route. I don't think Stan Lee and the writers are especially Jeezus-happy and out to make some kind of statement, so it doesn't bug me.

Gotta be honest, it didn't bother me in the least. I smirked, but wasn't the slightest bit offended. He was born and raised in the 1930's/40's. He's been comatose for seventy years. Why the hell would he NOT be talking about the Christian God, when Christianity was still all powerful when he was put on ice? Seemed like a perfectly reasonable line to me.

Also, to Shay, In the Marvel universe a new "God" is shown pretty much every other world-shattering event. It could really only have been the Christian God, since everyone from the Olympians to Thor's pantheon just turn out to be extradimensional superbeings. I think the only unexplained being is "Death" who shows up every once in a while in a character's backstory, but is never really expanded upon beyond being "The embodiment of the Aspect of Death". Now that I think about it though, there was also an instance where the Fantastic Four (minus Ben Grimm) went to see God (with SCIENCE!) and asked him to resurrect Ben. God turned out to be a comic book artist who looked suspiciously like the creator of the original Fantastic Four comic, and a fairly amiable fellow who did bring Ben back to life.

Bottom line is that Marvel (and DC, to the same extent) have always been very good at keeping the whole "Which God is the real God" thing out of their stories. They never broach the subject of the Judeo-Christian God, nor the Islamic Allah, nor the Hindu Gods being real or not. They tend to stick with "dead" gods, God-like beings, and nondescript God personae

Yeah, no surprise that the guy with the Deadpool picture has put a little time and research into this subject. xD

I'm a Marvelite myself.. and in regards to Capt. As Grady said. you have to take Capt's history in mind when he says a line like that. Marvel has always been really conscious about the backstories of their characters and attempted to have the characters act in accordance with that... That is when they had a solid back story and not one which shifted one way then another at times (ie, Wolverine's) .

I read comics, as a matter of fact i have over 400 trade paperbacks, and i notice it all the time but i just enjoy comics too much so i just ignore all that. whether we like it or not god is everywhere to the point where you have to dull your senses or else you'll be getting annoyed all the time.

I stopped reading after "So the other day I went to see The Avengers"

What did you expect, these movies are designed to catch as much money as possible, they have to lure in the retard flock because they're the majority.

I really loved The Avengers (even if I am more of a DC Universe fan) at that scene I rolled my eyes and nudged the person I was with, but I understood that Captain America is just that: Captain America.

Agreed. I basically interpreted the Cap as a characterization of the majority of America (especially that era) and moved on.

@grady

I have to check that Fantastic Four journey you speak of. Sounds really intriguing.

When I was a kid, I really lucked out - the distributor who came through town once a month, replacing the comic books at all of the stores with new editions, used to rip part of the covers off of the older comics and throw them all in the dumpster - I discovered which dumpster. I set up a stand in my front yard, and used to sit in a lawn chair under a shade tree and trade with the other neighborhood kids, 2 of theirs, for 1 of mine. I cleaned up. I guess you could say I was the juvenile prototype for the Simpsons' "Comic Book Guy" --

Seigel and Shuster, the two kids who invented Superman and sold the concept to DC (then Detective Comics) were both Jewish. The main name for god in the Bible (before he announced his name was Yahweh), was "El Shaddai," "He of the Mountain" - I've always suspected that that's what was behind the naming of Superman's Kryptonian family (as well as himself), "the house of El": Jor-El, Kal-El, etc.

Other than that, I haven't seen a lot of religious references in comics, though I will say (don't tell the theists), that that seems like a good way to indoctrinate young minds.
