the Texas sharpshooter fallacy: randomness, cause, and effect.

the pope's anti-condom message is sabotage in the fight against AIDS.
on the subject of the pope, Johann Hari writes in The Independent telling Catholics that it's them that the pope is abusing.

by now everyone's heard about Stephen Hawking's new book that says that we don't need a god to explain the universe but did you see one Susan Greenfield compare Hawking to the Taliban for having said such a thing about god? Ophelia Benson and Greg Fish struck back.
meanwhile, on the topic of Hawking's new book, Jerry Coyne linked to a review of the book in The Wall Street Journal by physicist Sean Carroll.

Jason Rosenhouse has been doing a lot of reading about how biblical scholars read the bible in preparation for writing a book on creationism and evolution and he's found some absurdities.

Nelson, I always look forward to your Sunday School column. I don't know how you find time to discover all this great stuff.

thanks Wesley! i really appreciate that. comments like that one, to say nothing of comments in general, make the time i do spend on the series worthwhile.
as for how i find the time, Google Reader is invaluable. if you're unfamiliar with Reader it integrates and tracks all of your RSS feeds in one place, giving you updates almost by the minute so that you get the newest posts from your favorite sites within minutes of their having been posted.
without Reader i'd have to constantly check dozens of sites myself every day and that would be impossible time-wise. i can also mark posts for inclusion in a folder so that when it comes time to put together Sunday School i can just go right to that folder and find the things that i had it mind to include during the week.
yeah, it's basically a lifesaver. :)

I love the Texas Sharpshooter Essay!

As always, thanks for wading through the cesspool of the interwebs in order to hand-deliver these gems every week. :)

@Shine: wasn't that great? i really enjoyed that one because of the way it specifically addresses the commonly touted parallels between Lincoln and Kennedy that go around in emails and on the internet. glad you enjoyed, thanks for the comment! :)

@Jeff: thanks for the kind words! thanks, too, for taking the time to express them by commenting. :)
