the running discussion between PZ Myers and Jerry Coyne about whether or not anything could happen/be discovered that would change an atheist's mind that god exists had one more participant added to it when Greta Christina jumped into the fray. PZ responded.
within the context of this discussion Jerry Coyne pointed to and commented on a post of physicist Sean Carroll where Carroll sought to define the "supernatural". Carroll's post is a good read in it's own right on the topic of whether or not dark matter is supernatural.

'god did it' is a terrible explanation.

Christopher Hitchens continues with his series of articles discussing his cancer.

John Loftus is preparing to discuss his differences with a Christian apologist in book form and as a first step he posted a few questions he asked the apologist (along with the questions he'd received in turn from the apologist). Leah at Unequally Yoked posted to ask why atheists ask such boring questions. there followed a discussion in the comments of her post between she and Loftus. she clarified what she meant a couple of times and ultimately apologized for insulting Loftus with her tone.

PZ Myers highlights the stupidity of one atheist's attempt to justify sending his kid to Catholic school.

Jerry Coyne pointed to this fantastic piece, a satirical 'guide for how to write about the "new atheists"'

one of the bloggers over at Discoblogs, Jennifer Welsh, pointed out this little simulator that's fun to mess with. it allows you to put in different parameters for an Earth impact and get data out of the simulator telling you what would happen as a result of the impact.

NASA's EPOXI spacecraft got within 700km from the comet Hartley 2, snapped some incredible images.

Ms. Magazine had an absolutely awful article about how the recent atheist movement doesn't have any women in it. Jen McCreight destroyed that notion in her response. Ophelia Benson comments.

there's a bit of a dispute going on within biology about the role epigenetics plays in evolution. Jerry Coyne has a couple of links to some recent salvos.

Nigel Leck wrote a chat bot that scans Twitter looking for global warming denialist-type comments and responds to them with links to relevant videos and articles refuting their comments.

Luke Muehlhauser continues discussing the Kalam Cosmological Argument. meanwhile, John Danaher posted the next post in his series on the Kalam.

Hemant Mehta pointed to a rebuttal of a recent Gallup poll showing religious people have higher well-being than atheists.

with so many clerics doing and saying such plainly awful things i wanted to highlight this story about a mega-church pastor of 25 years who decided that he could no longer sit by while teenagers were committing suicide due to their homosexuality, and so he came out admitting that he's gay.

thanks! and, yeah, it's to the magazine's credit that they published McCreight's response on their site.
i was impressed by that pastor as well. to radically upset his own life, and possibly ruin it owing to the circles he travels in, all to make a statement that discrimination of GLBT's is not ok. that's no small thing.

Thanks for the great articles this week. I had a great Sunday. God did it and the Hitchens articles made me scratch my head and feel sad at the same time. I liked PZ's article and I love reading about gnu atheist. Some of you're suggestions I had read on other sites, and I'm glad you included them here. As you know, bats are dying at an alarming rate. And, I understand, scientist don't know how to stop it. Thanks again.
