The trend in Christianity rates falling... wouldn't you expect them to fall off a cliff one day? Isn't there a point where everyone looks around and realizes that they don't have support and are not the majority then give it up due to peer pressure? I look at the rates of youth changing here in the US and think that it's more like two generations until it's relegated to the fringes. The KKK of the future.

Gaytor: agreed. the graph is interesting but certainly not representative of how things will unfold in reality, i think. the graph is interesting from the standpoint that it makes more real the coming extinction of Christianity. i agree with you that as the Christian population falls below some critical level there will be a cliff.

two generations until it's relegated to the fringes.

Sadly, but "the fringes" I think you mean the American south-east. I haven't seen any studies of this that covers only the south, but my experience tells me that you'd see the OPPOSITE trend. Indoctrination of the young has stepped up 10-fold since I was a child. I never knew any religious children growing up. I mean, sure everybody believed in God and went to church, but I now know 12 year old kids asking their friends if they've found Jesus and trying to "save" people! It's getting seriously insane.

As usual Great Stuff Nelson... I was kinda tickled at the attempt to connect quantum mechanics to hindu cosmology.... especially considering there's a much better argument for a connection through Paul Steinhardts cyclic theory.

http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/steinhardt02/steinhardt02_p2.html

Of course this doesn't mean that Hinduism is true if Steinhardts cyclic theory turns out to be correct.....but they could argue that their cosmology was a lot closer to modern science than those proposing a 6,000 year old earth and universe.

Galen, I wonder if that's a side of the country issue that skews my view? In WA if you were to preach creationism to most of the youth, you'd be openly laughed at. I guess that's what makes me hope that the squeeze will be on. If attendance is down in the South too, do you suspect that the proselytizing is a result of the slow defection?

JW's stopped by my house this week. They knocked and by the time I got downstairs they were gone and left a pamphlet. Something tells me they take a regular beating in WA. At least I can respect the JW's courage of their convictions over most Christians even if I snicker at the imminent end of the world for the tenth time.
