Hey guys! Welcome back! Hope you all had a good week. Thanks for joining me to recap the week's links! We'll get to it in a sec but first...
Have you guys found me on Google+ yet? I share Sunday School links on G+ as I find them each day; no waiting till Sunday! There's a great community of people I share the links and interact with. And on Twitter is where we do our book giveaways! If you connect with me at either place, let me know you found me through Sunday School, say hi!
This week on the Think Atheist Radio Show our guest is Dr. Elliott Sober! Dr. Sober is the Hans Reichenbach Professor and William F. Vilas Research Professor at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. One of the world's outstanding Philosophers of Science and author of the recently published Did Darwin Write The Origin Backwards?, in addition to numerous additional titles, his interests center on the Philosophy of Biology, evolution, altruism, and confronting "Intelligent Design". We're so happy Dr. Sober joined us to discuss evolution, The Design Argument, Fine-Tuning, and much more. We were so pleased to have him join us– make sure to tune in as soon as you can! You know you can listen to the live presentation tonight at 5PM Pacific/8PM Eastern, but you can also always check out any of our past interviews from the archive, or grab this and any of our shows from our iTunes page!
And if you missed our interview with Vanity Fair magazine's Editor-At-Large, Mr. Cullen Murphy, talking about his new book God's Jury all about The Inquisition, be sure to check that out! Fascinating and horrifying bit of history there!
Alright, LINKS!!!
The advantages of living in the dark: the multiple evolution events of blind cavefish.
Strong religious belief is no excuse for intimidation.
Just how important are the ten commandments?
How to argue about politics or, the fundamental contradiction in Republican party values.
Did Russian scientists find life on Venus? Um, no.
Belief in evolution boils down to a gut feeling.
Did Michael Shermer make a big mistake in writing a piece about whether Alfred Russell Wallace was a creationist or an evolutionist for the Discovery Institute's site? Sure looks that way!
Karen Armstrong wants us all to love Islam.
Scientists discover new clues to the chemical origins of life.
Offer people money to change their beliefs and watch what their brains do when they agree. The neurobiology of profit vs. principle.
Disgust's evolutionary role is irresistable to researchers.
New research shows that Archaeopteryx was dressed for flight.
Once again, believers have it wrong: Atheists don't just want sex, drugs, and lack of morality.
It has traditionally been thought that a planet like ours would need a moon like we have in order for life to evolve to the point of intelligence. (It's about stability) Turns out that may not be true.
3 ways conservative Christianity's obsessions promote abortions.
Russell Blackford discusses his new book Freedom of Religion and the Secular State arguing that the secular state has no moral mandate.
Will Brazil's plan to teach schoolchildren philosophy create better citizens, a better society?
The disfunctionality of America: income inequality, religion and evolution.
Baby steps versus long jumps. The "size" of evolutionary change and why it matters.
Ed Yong wrote for Scientific American about a new theory that has bonobos– close cousins to chimpanzees– domesticaing themselves. He had more thoughts on his blog. Fascinating.
Does the BBC have a problem with science?
How long-running is the longest running lab experiment?
BioLogos and Adam and Eve: why accomodationism won't work.
Life beyond Earth? Underwater caves in the Bahamas could provide clues.
In real time, a virus learns a new way to infect.
Physicists discover quantum speed limit.
This week Newt Gingrich made the extraordinary statement that if he's elected president he'll put a base on the moon. Too bad it's just another of his many absurd statements. Lawrence Krauss gives his thoughts.
Conservatives use creationist playbook to atttack climate change education in schools.
Human nature and the neurobiology of conflict.
Atheist arguments = racist cultural imperialism?
Questioning where our galaxy's next supernova be and whether we'll be able to see it happen.
Did you guys see this weird stuff about this scientist and his theory that the Earth is alive, an actual living organism? PZ Myers has the best of the rants about how stupid this is.
And in more news about stupidity, Alain de Botton wants to build a temple to atheism. Seriously. LOL.
When pseudoscience kills. (From the "What's the harm in believing in nonsense?" files)
We vilify them when they behave disgustingly, we should praise them when they behave honorably.
Could a person be swallowed by a whale (Jonah, for instance) and survive?

Comment by Robert Karp on January 29, 2012 at 9:50am Thanks Nelson! Awesome as always!
Comment by Greg Gorey on January 29, 2012 at 10:11am great stuff. I particularly like the proper use of "LOL" at the end of the Alain de Button story.
Comment by Greg Gorey on January 29, 2012 at 10:14am also (and someone can quote me on this), having a temple to atheism is like having a laboratory for religion.
Comment by Gary Bergeron on January 29, 2012 at 11:39am I have my own "Temples"....Books. Carl Sagan, Richard Feynman, Dawkins and Dennett...many others. Alain's temple reeks the smell of "faith", which atheism is a lack thereof.
Scrap the temple idea and donate that money to food banks and public libraries.
Thanks for sharing the wonderfully educational links, Nelson!
Comment by Ed on January 29, 2012 at 12:49pm The gut feeling of intuition is hard to override. My gut tells me that the theory of evolution is entirely plausible and based on sound evidence and reasoning. Unfortunately many theists probably have a similar feeling but choose to err on the side of myth and superstition anyway.

That laboratory on religion would need one piece of equipment: a vessel containing one thing- a perfect vacuum.
Comment by Ed on January 29, 2012 at 1:17pm When pseudoscience kills:
"Lavigne died in hospital after she and eight others in a personal-development seminar called Dying in Consciousness were covered with mud, wrapped in plastic, put under blankets and immobilized with their heads in cardboard boxes for about nine hours, under instructions to hyperventilate."
Why is common sense in such short supply these days?
Thanks, Nelson!
love the story about the Pastor that walked away from his faith...I can relate...thanks Nelson!
