Dr. Gericke joined us to talk about the conception of Yahweh in the Old Testament, how this conception is so different from the conception of God today, and what this means for those that profess to believe in the god of the 3 Abrahamic faiths. you'll walk away from hearing this interview with new rhetorical tools that will enable you to undermine faith using the findings of biblical scholarship.

Hemant Mehta had previously defended a high school teacher that had posted his bigoted anti-gay thoughts on his own personal Facebook page, saying that was his right as a private citizen on his off time and on his personal Facebook page. but new evidence has Mehta now condemning the teacher.
woman loses her sense of smell, ends up with a phantom sensation of being able to smell her own brain.
often opponents of evolution (and even theistic evolutionists that argue that humans are specially favored) will point to the vast differences in cognition between humans and our closest relatives. but they're forgetting the missing hominids!
believers think we need religion to behave like good moral people- here's why they're wrong.

why is the universe biased against big, bright stars?
recently Sam Harris posted to his site to say that we needed to raise taxes on the rich. he wrote this week to express surprise at the (often disgusting) outrage that followed from a certain interesting segment of his readership.
a type 1A supernova has been spotted. this is a big deal. we spotted it quickly too and were able to watch it increase in brightness.
did sex with Denisovans and Neanderthals shape our immune system? maybe.
on the internet, Christianity is losing by a long shot.
Jerry Coyne describes a new paper that estimates the number of species on earth at almost 9 million. John Wilkins calls foul.

yet one more time, Dr. Michael Mann has been cleared of any wrong doing- "ClimateGate" was manufactured.

Comment by Albert Bakker on August 28, 2011 at 4:39am Wonderful piece by Paula Kirby on why the fact of evolution is a threat to Christianity (and Islam, Judaism etc.) By extension one might conclude that science in general is a threat in that the body of science is assuredly consistent by methodologically exploiting doubt resulting in diminishing incompleteness, while aforementioned religions constitute complete revelations about which to be certain, unavoidably leading to incrementing inconsistency. Science is furthered by asking tough questions, religion on the other hand is troubled by it. Enough as it turns out to identify the existential dangers posed by the free exchange of ideas on the Internet as the "greatest threat to Christians." It is a wonderful world indeed.
Comment by Robert Karp on August 28, 2011 at 7:57am Thanks Nelson. Great links. Love the fish eating a fish eating a fish fossil and the 160 million year old fossil. This is why I love atheism. Who needs fairly tales when one has science. Amazing.
Comment by Dennis Smith on August 28, 2011 at 9:25am Regarding the piece on Morality without God, the fact remains it is no argument for the existence of God. Even IF it were impossible to construct an objective morality without God, it does nothing to prove there is a God without first assuming, as the presuppositionalist do, the content of the Bible and it's absolute veracity. The argument serves as an attempt at philosophical terrorism.
If there is no God there is no other choice, like it or not, but to construct a system of social behavior ourselves if as humans there is a need for one. We are alone on this planet. We have only ourselves. We may, practically speaking, be alone in the universe. If there is a need for morality it can only come from ourselves, by ourselves for the sake of ourselves.

Comment by James on August 28, 2011 at 11:50am Wow! Another great list of links!
Comment by Henry Ruddle on August 28, 2011 at 12:43pm Bill Keller's NYT piece had an excellent opening question, "If a candidate for president said he believed that space aliens dwell among us, would that affect your willingness to vote for him?" Many evangelicals proudly display the NTW logo, which means "Not of This World." By implication, aliens do dwell among us. Imagine if "Are you of this world?" became a common question to ask candidates!
