This week on Think Atheist Radio we have our chat with Mr. Matthew Hutson! Mr. Hutson uses his Bachelor of Science degree in Cognitive Neuroscience from Brown University and Master's in Science Writing from MIT to do just that: write about science. For 4 years ending in 2010 the News Editor of the excellent Psychology Today, he has seen his writing published in The New York Times, Wired, Discover, and Popular Mechanics, just to name a few. Mr. Hutson's recently published book, The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking, describes how evolved cognitive short cuts and biases produce our beliefs in magic and the supernatural. This is among the most interesting questions in cognitive science and the discussion is entered into here in a compelling way that pushes the reader from page to page. Join us!

With the anti-feminism argument still going strong in our community, I read Hemant's blog post about women and Christianity as ironic. If we did a similar survey about support for women in attendance and in leadership, would we fare any better than the Christians that Barna studied? The rape and death threats need to stop. Anti-harassment policies need to be in place at all atheist events. Believers at least think they are doing their god's will when they put women down. What is our excuse?

Dermise of the Neandertals.

I have read much speculation about reasons for the demise of the Neandertals, but I have seen no one posit the diseases out of Africa theory.  After Hernan Desoto completed his tour through southeastern areas now part of the US, the Great Dieing ensued decimating indigenous populations.  Researching my Cherokee ancestry, I found that the Great Dieing reduced the thirteen Cherokee Clans to the seven that remain today.  Complete eradication of thriving Amazon societies followed visits of other explorers.  Could not contagion introduced by Out of Africa Moderns have also decimated the Neandertals?  Have any of you seen this theory discussed anywhere?
