I got a friend request on Myspace for Straight Atheists. For some reason I thought it would be something like straight-up Atheist. I dunno, now that doesn't make much sense--but that's really not the point. This guy is bashing homosexuality and the Atheists that are okay and support/tolerate it. He calls it a malfunction and what not. He seems to be a militant anti-homosexual Atheist. I will no doubt be deleting his page. Sure, he has the right to his opinion, and he can post it where ever he chooses. He says that people that don't agree with him aren't true "FREETHINKERS". He seems pretty hypocritical.

Here's the URL so you guys can check it out. That's something I've wondered, how many anti-gay Atheists there are. But it doesn't really please me to see how many people seem to agree with him.

Just something to look at.

That's ridiculous. Sounds like that dude is trying to logically justify his own prejudice.

He says he's not AGAINST gays.
He's just DISGUSTED by gays.

... and apparently COMPLETELY OBSESSED with gays.
They're so DIRTY right? It's so NASTY what they do, isn't it?
I bet you could go on talking about it all day, couldn't you?
Maybe even writing music about that NAUGHTY gay sex, right?

But really, I agree with him in this way: yeah, guys are hairy and gross and not sexually attractive to me. Then again: I don't spend a lot of time thinking about and writing music about ("disgusting") gay sex.

Protest a little too much, maybe?

(Also, that "straight pride" thing is a little too chillingly similar to "white pride": as if the overwhelming majority really needed to make a point of puffing themselves up.)

It's just evidence that one does not have to be rational to be an atheist. And yeah, he's no 'freethinker'. Anyone who purports that 'you have to agree with me to be a freethinker' is not one.

Any sufficiently large sample will have all the variability found in the general population. Ergo, there are atheists who are idiots!

I mean, if he didn't preach the freethinking bit so much it wouldn't be as bad. I don't agree with him in the slightest, but its harder to swallow when he keeps going on and on about how he and the people who agree with him are freethinkers.

Personally, I've never really understood the whole "men are gross" argument. If that really is true, how does he explain all of the straight women in the world? Does he not believe that straight women find men attractive?

This is actually a topic that I have discussed in the past with feminist friends because it seems to be tied up with the demonization of female sexuality. To me, this argument goes hand in hand with the very old fashioned and very fascist idea put forth by western religion which says that women are not meant to enjoy sex.

Traditionally, women were often taught that sex is generally miserable. Women were not expected to obtain any pleasure from sex, and the act itself was seen as a necessary duty that a woman performed in order to please her husband. Even today, some muslim countries go so far as to use female genital mutilation to help ensure that sex will never be enjoyable for a woman.

Of course, any women who had the audacity to actually enjoy sex or express an open attraction to men were demonized and punished. In muslim countries, such behavior can still bring a death sentence.

If men are really so disgusting, it would seem to imply that sex with a man would be far from enjoyable. It would be nothing more than a horrible burden that a straight woman must endure. As for the gays and the women who enjoy men too much, well, there is always stoning. Just like the good old days.

looks like he didn't quite get to being a true freethinker. He has a clear prejudice that will never change. Now, one could argue that homosexuality doesn't make Darwinian sense since the parties won't be able to reproduce traditionally, and pass on their genes. If that was the argument, I would agree. But at the same time I can't agree with the dogmatic hatred that religions press on these individuals. Part of being a freethinker is being open minded. I for one may not see homosexuality as my cup of tea. Yet I respect that that is who they are and don't hate them for simply being true to themselves. I have some homosexual/bisexual friends, and they are genuine people just like you and I. Charlie needs to realize that one can be open minded and still not be a 'fan'. But to carry on like he is, only goes to illustrate how close minded he is on this particular subject.

Maybe it is a Darwinian sort of thing. We need people to stop procreating so much, and evolution knew that and said "hey, maybe we should pair a portion of the population that will not cause an increase in population".

Some people can shake off religion, but not the faux moral baggage it came with.

It's sad, but when can you do? He's a douchebag. Sexual orientation is such a minor issue when you consider the big picture. Who you love does not determine your talents, abilities, intelligence, etc., so why should we ever even consider it when evaluating a person?

Some people like to pretend there's this universal -- but groundless -- moral theory to human nature, that we're all supposed to sway to innately. Frankly, accepting any position because it just "feels" right, is the same as believing in God because you "just know": it's irrational (and this, ironically enough, is the actual moral crime).
Of course there's atheists that adhere to an imaginary moral code that just reeks of theistic belief: for example, see the earlier discussion on the "myth of sexual purity". Morality came up.. and, unsurprisingly, it was completely defenseless.
