Stephen King Never Wrote Anything This Terrifying...

Over the weekend I began reading Jeff Sharlat's "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power." I'm quickly finding out that not only is the media in America spending WAY too little time on this C Street "church" for conservative Christian politicians. They're ignoring the important part of the story.

Forget the scandalous affairs of which so many of it's members are guilty. They are of little importance in the grand scheme of things. What is important is that in the heart of our nation's capitol we have a group of hardcore fundamentalist Christians who openly call themselves the "Christian Mafia." They defend the actions of dictators like Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, claiming that these men were part of God's chosen and thus the normal rules of morality do not apply. They are 100% anti-democracy and their mission is to overthrow American democracy and install in it's place a Christian Fundamentalist Theocracy. They firmly believe that they are above the law.

But David Coe, Doug Coe's son and heir apparent, calls himself simply a friend to men such as John Ensign, whom he guided through the coverup of his affair. I met the younger Coe when I lived for several weeks as a member of the Family. He's a surprising source of counsel, spiritual or otherwise. Attempting to explain what it means to be chosen for leadership like King David was -- or Mark Sanford, according to his own estimate -- he asked a young man who'd put himself, body and soul, under the Family's authority, "Let's say I hear you raped three little girls. What would I think of you?" The man guessed that Coe would probably think that he was a monster. "No," answered Coe, "I wouldn't." Why? Because, as a member of the Family, he's among what Family leaders refer to as the "new chosen." If you're chosen, the normal rules don't apply.

I could go on and on about this disgusting, self-righteous C Street Cult and how far it has penetrated the American political system (and it's not just Republicans, they are the majority but this cult has many Democratic members as well) but I'd rather leave it to the professional who actually spent time with this disgusting extremist group.

Buy the book. Read the book. If you don't think this cult is the single biggest threat to our way of life already, you will when you're done.

Sounds similar to John Hagee's remarks regarding the Holocaust being part of God's plan for the Jews. I saw this author's interview on The Daily Show and the premise of the book does sound plausible. Because it plays to my bias, I would read it with extra skepticism.
