Sometimes I wonder.......(An amusing example of stupidity)

You know what? I like people, I really do. I strongly believe in humanity......But sometimes.......

People make my brain hurt.

Yesterday I was soundly asleep when I was jolted from the bed by violent pounding on my door. I jumped up and opened the door quickly, I was thinking that maybe some shit went down. You know those cop knocks? where the person uses their entire fist and arm to knock on the door and it shakes the whole house? It was one of those so I assumed it was something important.

As my eyes adjusted to the light outside I saw, standing before my little metal steps, a young private, no older than 21. He was one of those mouth breathers. You know the type, mouth always open, teeth taking in some sun, breaths deep and audible. He was wearing thick dark rimmed glasses and a PT uniform that was falling off of his goofy disproportionate frame, a shameful site to waking eyes to say the least.

I was tempted to slam the door in his face right there but I decided, against better judgment, to hear what he had to say. I raised my eyebrows, body language for "What the fuck do you want?"

He started: "He - Hey, oh...did I wake you up man?...Sorry...I...I cant get my internet to work."
(I don't know this guy at all, he lives a few rooms down from me but I have never seen him before)
I looked at him in a way that conveyed perfectly my disgust with his reason for waking me up but I responded, I was not an asshole, I was trying to be good.
I asked him if the router in his room was plugged in and he responded by informing me that "all of the cables are plugged into the router, yeah." I said, " the ROUTER plugged in, are the lights blinking on the ROUTER, is the big black cable plugged into the wall?" His reply will haunt me for while and I will have to work to regain some of my faith in humanity. "You mean the router needs to be on? OOHhhhh, ok, thanks alot man." And he waddled back to his room.

I had to stand there for a moment and contemplate what just happened......If I had a blunt object in my hand at that moment I would be writing this from prison. So it was an incredibly stupid question from and incredibly stupid guy, so what? It happens right? Well the troubling thing to me is that this person carries a loaded weapon every day and is ultimately responsible for the persons life next to him. That is just scary to me.....I dunno what else to say, where do people like this come from, what the hell is going through their minds? I'm confused and depressed, lol, just thought I would share this, I found it amusing and I hope you do too.

yeah, wow I totally agree with your viewpoint on this one. Quite scary indeed. Good read haha I got a good sense of that knocking on the door. The lame maintenance dudes at my apartment do the same kind of knocks... it's pure evil haha.

This is why I want a house without enough land around it to act as a buffer against this kind of stuff. =P

Do you think he tried knocking normally a couple times first?

No he didn't Matt, my bed is a couple of feet from the door. My room out here is roughly 10 x 10, it was over kill. lol, I'm a very light sleeper.

Working in the tech industry I'm constantly amazed by intelligent people who are completely stupefied by technology. You'd think in this day-and-age that most people under 40 should have at least a basic grasp of the essentials regarding electronics (things like plugged in, power on, cables connected).

I try to be optimistic, but when someone I assumed to be generally intelligent proves how completely clueless they can be about a common essential; I have to wonder if they really are competent in other areas.

There is a reason why the first question on almost every tech support script is 'is the printer/computer/TV/phone/toaster plugged in?' Working in tech support burns people out as quickly as it does due to overexposure to high doses of stupidity.

I work in retail, and about 95% of my customers barely have 2 brain cells to rub together. And these people look down on me because I work in a video store, yet I know I could run mental laps around them, because they're all just so incredibly dumb. I feel your pain =(.

Lol, been there too Laura and I was a CSR for Microsoft for a while but I only got one guy with the "Is it plugged in" question but it was classic. I swear I could be a millionaire if I could just bring myself to harness peoples stupidity.....but I cant.
