...and that's pretty cool of him.

I knew there was a reason I wasn't trolling this guy's Twitter account.

Now, I'm no fan of the job, in general. But this guy seems alright!

My good works are animal adoption charities, veterans programs and of course, my Plant a Row Program, where I grow and donate fresh produce to people in need.

How are you getting to heaven?

I think he definitely has the right mindset in this particular area at least.   Now compare that to the latest thing Pat Robertson has said.   Pope wins!

I think we should have a Celebrity Death Match.

New Pope Vs. Pat Robertson!

I'm totally in the Pope's corner!

I like where his head is, concerning the poor and such.

I hope he speaks up on condoms soon!

I cannot honestly conceive of a more forlorn endeavor than a discussion over who gets to go to heaven . People do love their their superstitions .

He's an improvement on the last pope but then again Ratzi the pedo-enabler set the bar pretty low . Anyway, an old man who wears dresses and funny hats, and who professes magical powers, should not be consulted on matters of, well, anything really.

I think it's great as it's likely to increase tolerance.  It is easier to distrust and hate somebody that you believe is going to hell.   Definitely a step in the right direction.

The PR machine of the Vatican is in full swing - all popes seem good, at first. This bloke has been washing feet, lets see if he opens the books of the bank, lets see if he kicks out the pedophiles who are at the moment cloistered safely on vatican grounds - lets see him actually build a church that Teresa should have built with the millions she got. He will hide just as much, 'cause the PR machine will control him. There will be a lot more BS to come.

Thanks for the heads up

Hopefully he is actually really sincere about what he is saying. Will be good for both Catholics and Atheists worldwide

What he's saying has long been the position of the Catholic Church, which has always been fairly nuanced about salvation.  It's really nothing new.  The notion that belief is the (sole) requirement for salvation is largely a Protestant one.

I do like the folksy and accessible way he said it, however.

I'm not so certain that he's saying that you can get a one way ticket to heaven without accepting basic Catholic and Christian beliefs as much as he's saying that we will always be accepted into the church as converts.

Comment by Dr. Bob on May 24, 2013 at 11:23am

@Sagacious, he's saying the first.

We believe that salvation comes through Christ and the Church, but also that God is just and a lot bigger than us, and that we don't really understand everything.  Who makes it to heaven, the atheist who lived a righteous life or the pope who covered up child molesters?  The atheist does.  The pope burns.   If the atheist is an atheist because she was turned off by the behavior of some numnutz of a Christian, is God going to hold that against the atheist or against the Christian?  Against the Christian.  Besides, it's an act of virtue to recognize a numnutz.
