So alone in this part of the country

Hey guys, I'm new and would like to know more about the site and such.

I'm from a  rural, close minded town in Montana. Everybody here is Christian (but me, two friends, and the boyfriend). It's sometimes difficult when you're in high school, and people have: put holy water in my water bottle, shoved bibles into my locker, or just flat out ignore my exsisence.

People around these parts are nuts. Once in my Biolagy class, while going through our text books, a girl switched into a different class. Why? "These books are laced with Darwinism!" Or when asked in history, " what would make the world a peaceful place?' "having no religion" i answered, ready to back myself up. Then in came out. " if there were no religion, people would have no morals! i hope you know youre going to hell!" replied a girl.

it's starting to be whatever though. I have 2 years left, then I'm out of this "Holy Town". I'm tired of all the bullshit religion is. I think religion was created to ease the mind because there were questions we didnt yet know how to answer. Well, now we have answers, and proof behind them. Suck it.

I think you are fortunate to be freed from the mental bondage of religion at such a young age.

The uneducated religious nuts in this country spew out so much irrational nonsense it sickens me.  They talk of the Bible, but haven't read it.  They criticize Darwin, but haven't read his books.  They speak of patriotism, but know nothing of the writings of the most intelligent founding fathers.

These brainwashed kids are a huge problem for this country- they will find themselves praying to a god that doesn't exist to solve problems they are too dumb to solve (just like our current "leaders" - and, ultimately, I believe their scientifically illiterate and ignorant parents are to blame.

And, to be able to stand your own with respect to the arguments presented by the likes of your community, I would recommend the following (if you haven't already read them):

The Bible:

The Bible- from cover to cover

Who Wrote the Bible (Friedman)

Jesus, Interrupted (Ehrman)

The Rejection of Pascal's Wager (Tobin)(nice website as well)

Darwin's Ghost

The Greatest Show on Earth

Any reputable Science text

(Perhaps also On the Origin of the Species and The Descent of Man, by Darwin)

The New Atheism (Stenger)

god is NOT Great (Hitchens)

The God Delusion (Dawkins)

Portable Atheist (a collection of essays)

Holy Horrors (Haught)

Breaking the Spell (Dennett)

The Christian Delusion (Loftus)

The Varieties of Scientific Experience (Sagan)

Atheist Universe (Mills)

The Evolution of God (Wright)

The Religion Virus (James)

The End of Faith (Harris)

The Moral Landscape (Harris)

Demon-Haunted World (Sagan)

I got many of these in good condition or better as used books on Amazon- you could try your library as well.

Good luck and enjoy- I did!

Welcome, and so sorry you have to live in such a small-minded town right now. It looks as if you're hanging in there quite well right now, so I hope that you will continue to stand up for what you believe in :) Good luck!

As a social primate species we evolved a deep sense of right and wrong in order to accentuate and reward reciprocity and cooperation, and to attenuate and punish excessive selfishness and free riding. As well, evolution created the moral emotions that tell us that lying, adultery, and stealing are wrong because they destroy trust in human relationships that depend on truth-telling, fidelity, and respect for property. It would not be possible for a social primate species to survive without some moral sense. On the constitution of human nature is built the constitutions of human societies. (R. Dawkings - The God delusion)

Therefore no need for religion...! The bible has the least source for morality: Leave your family and follow him; stone to dead if you work in sabbath, stone if your woman is not virgen or doesn't satisfy you; sacrifice children; have sex with your sister, have sex daughters with father; if 4 children make fun of a bald guy kill them plus 42 more; and so on... and on...,  Is this the moral that we should learn..?

Tasha welcome to TA and you should feel proud of the path of reason you've chosen. As the other comments suggest, educate yourself. Knowledge is power. Those books are all great places to start. Feel free to ask questions and jump in discussions. If you have a problem with a believer or something you need help with don't hesitate! We're here for you!

absolutely not! and furthermore i believe because of the bible, a much too excesive amount of people strongly feel the need for self gratification.

I do good, God gives me eternal life, and if I repent I'm spiritually free to murder, rape, harass, and whatever else because when I'm done, sure I may go to prison, but God is there with me, and I am forgiven. bull shit.

Do something and think about the friggin' consiquesnces. There is NO god, you have to work for what you want, because nobody just deserves shit for being a good christian. that's wrong. And furthermore because i have my own sence of right and wrong, I dont have to listen to a book, written 400 years after it actually happened.

As RV suggested educate yourself, the bible presents the best case against christianity. Read the bible you will be one of the few in your small town that has, the bible is the most bought and least read books on the earth today.

You'll run into a fair share of theist who are just plain stubborn. They do want to admit they could be wrong and will stick to what they know in spite of evidence presented to them. Not wanting to admit their lives were wasted. In areas like yours tend to have a mob mentality sucking the unaware into the delusion while trying to destroy freethinking in the wake.

Where in Montana?  I live in North Dakota and know exactly how you feel.  I have to watch what I say because I have a seven year old son and if people knew I was "ungodly" I'm fairly sure they wouldn't let him play with their children.  He wants to join Cub Scouts, but we're not sure if we should let him because both groups are run by churches here in town.  If you need someone closer to talk to, drop me a line, maybe we can trade info.
