Sarah Silverman says Sell the Vatican...

..but wait... the whole Catholic shtick is "suffering"... right?... and who could be suffering more than people starving to death?! I'll tell you who! The Pope! How do I figure?! Like this: To be a good Catholic, you have to suffer. The Pope WISHES he could suffer, but he HAS to live in the marble palace and sit on the gilded throne and ride in the Mercedes PopeMobile.... He HAS to, because it's his calling... But, because of that, he CAN'T suffer, which causes HIM the greatest suffering OF ALL!! ...next to Jesus, of course... ...and, uh... Yeah.

So, Sarah's plan... nice idea, but it would never work. Really... I mean ... she estimates the value of the Vatican at $500 Billion... let's just say that's about right... I'd guess it's a little low, but.... let's say that's it. The United States has totally pissed that away (at least 2 times over) hunting down 2 dudes over the last 8 years, and we only managed to get one of them... killed tens (maybe hundreds) of thousands of others along the way... but, really... not a terribly stunning success rate.

Ace Ventura could've offed Osama bin Laden by now, and he's a fictional character! And all that money COULD have gone to feeding the world.

Kevin Costner could've fed the world instead of making WaterWorld.... but he didn't.

Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Paul Allen, Warren Buffet... these guys have the cash on hand. They don't have to sell a thing. Feed the world? Done. Nope.

We could all pressure our legislators to just "Git 'er done"... but we don't. Know why? We, collectively, just don't care enough to really do anything about it.

Disagree? Prove me wrong.

Sounds about right.

I've had it out for rich people for years. That shit sickens me.

Another example: Beyonce or some rich bitch got a diamond-encrusted manicure. Yeah. It lasted her maybe a week, but she spent thousands of dollars on it. She could have just PAINTED her nails and fed a village in Africa for a month (to use a worn-out cliche haha)

I do not disagree that some revel in excess while others struggle against shortage. But how would temporary contributions solve permanent problems? A direct transfer of wealth in the form of consumable resources is a band-aid solution at best. If anything, such finite altruism results in eventual cruelty by only prolonging instead of preventing starvation.

I agree with the sentiment and entirely support compassionate assistance of all human beings in need, but I think that a true solution goes far beyond simply feeding the world.

I get the whole "give fish v. teach to fish" thing, and you're right there.

My point was more along the lines of, "sure, you could sell the Vatican, but there's plenty of other sources of money, right here in America... sick-making misappropriations of resources... to throw at these problems. The problem is that not enough people care enough about other people to actually do anything."

Ah, I see. I completely agree with you there. The materialism in this country is at disgusting levels; I really cannot even fathom the money that people waste on useless things.
