Religion has been attacked with satires for years. It is our most ethical and effective method of revealing bigotry and insane beliefs.

This I think is part of or at least parallel to the same discussion as that between "accommodationist" and "militant" atheists. I take the PZ Myers position. Everything must be done at once. By different persons with different backgrounds, skills and expertises, with different temperaments, at different occasions, and all preferably appropriately done. Ridicule is like the bark of a dog, it gets the sheep's attention and in motion. Once they're on the move, the dogs gotta lie down. In the analogy in my experience, this is often were things go wrong.

It depends on too many things to make it a standard position towards religion and all things related to it. I kind of agree with Albert. Some people will take it too far and we'll end up being the ones the world should get rid of. We're not trying to get rid of religious people just because they are religious people, but because they do bad things to the planet and to others, and because they don't really know the truth and most of them just inherited a religion, so taking their place isn't the solution. We should think a lot about what we do in every particular situation... there is no default approach.

 

You should have made this a discussion not a blog post, if you don't have more to say about this, and you just want people to discuss. It is a lot easier to reply to someone directly - you can't do that in a comment to a blog post.
