Comment by Jimmy Boy on August 3, 2011 at 12:07pm Couldn't agree more. And does make me wonder if there are sometimes opportunities to do more professionally through groups like this. I'm hiring grad business consultant right now for eg. There isn't a place to put up an ad here - but I would have done if I could...and be delighted that anyone I hired would be likely to come with a certain level of individuality and ability to think for themselves.
It's a great forum - and lots of interesting people.

Comment by Matthew Wood on August 3, 2011 at 11:58pm While I have not shared any personal hardships on TA, I have always found more help from the non-religious sector than the religious.
Case in point, we had an electric bill that was a bit steep, tried what we could with the electric company with what we had in terms of money, but they would not give any sort of reprieve. Now, we cashed out the Wii and still were short. I thought, churches being all about charity and helping people out (motioning jack-off motion), maybe we could get the difference from them. Nope, you either had to be a member of their church, attend so many services prior, blah blah blah this and that.
My friend (also an atheist) needed a ride to the airport (he lives in KY and I in TN). I told him sure, I picked him up, when I got there our electricity was off. I explained the situation to him, but told him not to worry because I would get paid in 3 days. He would have none of that and offered the difference. Now this is coming from a friend who is more hard-up for cash than I am.
But through seeing the folks on this site, it is pretty awesome the help people give to one another from what I have observed
Comment by Rick on August 4, 2011 at 10:38am Perhaps it’s because we don’t have to worry about what will happen to us in the afterlife that we are free to turn our attention to helping others in our community during this life. The absence of Big Brother seems to promote selfless acts.
