i have spent most of today laying in bed pondering and listening to some "symphony of science" youtube videos.
i am so happy and peaceful today, contemplating my insignificant existence in our vast and beautiful universe.
i am both humbled and proud to know that i have the cosmos within me, just as all life does.
there is so much to be learned about our universe, i am so happy to learn and know more.

this comes to my pondering... what do you think about the idea of "atheist spirituality"?
i'm not sure i buy it but if i was to consider myself a spiritual person it would be based on the idea that i am a vessel for the expansion of this tremendous universe we belong to.

just sitting here on a cloudy, rainy sunday looking for some company from my dear atheist friends and community.

warm regards my friends.

Atheism and spirituality are two separate issues that don't necessarily have to be mutually exclusive. While I'm not spiritual myself, I do appreciate the spirituality of knowing that the matter that composes each of us has existed for aeons before we did, and will continue to exist for aeons after we perish.

It's also a great metaphor for how matter could very well be infinite in nature, in terms of how long it's existed.

In my opinion, the term 'Atheist spirituality' sends the wrong message. Perhaps 'enlightened Atheist' or 'awestruck Atheism' cold be closer terms for what you're trying to convey. I too marvel at the facts of out amazing and beautiful universe.

thank you james (: i think that is more appropriate.

James is correct. Unlike YAA I derive no pleasure from knowing that my a-toms will be a part of the great cosmos after I am fodder for the worm. I am awe struck by the universe, of course, but, still, it is just a machine that grinds us up into little pieces.

I didn't say I derived pleasure from it; I just recognize and appreciate the spiritual nature of pondering such matters. :)

Yes, YAA, you're correct. My fault. I didn't mean to put words in your mouth.

Sophie, do you mean WOO WOO in the Michael Shermer sense? :)

Why the hostility? Let people ponder whatever they want to ponder. Doesn't necessarily become a belief system or a religion or anything. Being an atheist doesn't mean you have to take the grumpy stance that we're here, big deal, after we die we rot, and before we lived we didn't exist, big deal.

Atheism and spirituality have no relationship, but they're not mutually exclusive.

PJ i'm not sure why you have chosen to read and respond to my blog considering you have nothing to add to the discussion except to belittle me and try and make me feel bad for thinking, pondering and reflecting on something which i find to be very fascinating. i also don't think you actually READ my blog considering i even said "i don't quite buy it." but regardless, thanks for responding.
