Rabbis Declare 'Shabbat Elevators' Violate Sabbath Rules

In a story in USA Today, a decision has been handed down by a group of influencial rabbies in Israel that declares the use of "shabbat elevators" violates the prohibition against work on the sabbath.

Shabbat elevators stop at every floor on their own, which means that riders don't have to press any buttons--a violation against "work" on the sabbath for orthodox Jews. The elevators have been in use for decades and mandated by law in certain builidings in Israel.

The story states that "although the decree did not specify exactly what the problem is, prior rabbinical debates have focused on whether the number and weight of passengers influences the elevators' operation."

Geez. I had no idea that god was so technical in his edicts.

What happens to all those who have ridden the elevators in the past? Are they forgiven?

Maybe this is why Israel has had so many problems since its creation 50 years ago. People pissed god off for riding an automatic elevator and he's chosen suicide bombers to provide the appropriate punishment.
