I saw a CNN story recently (sorry, don't have link for it) that talked about various companies who have begun taking advantage of doomsday believers who happen to have money. The story talked about one segment in particular - the companies building underground bunkers so that when the Apocalypse/End-Times/Doomsday comes they will have a place to live and ride it out.

One of the companies profiled is Vivos. While some companies build individual bunkers for people, Vivos is building a series of large-scale bunkers that hold hundreds upon hundreds of people. You have to apply for membership and then be "selected" to be a part of a shelter group because they want to have a "diversity" in each location - but they emphasize that you will be cohabitating with "like-minded people". Hmmmph.

The escrow deposit is $25,000. However, if you want to get into one of the two existing shelters already under construction, then you have to deposit $35,000. Once the shelters are complete the deposit amount goes up to $50,000. Their site doesn't tell you how much the final cost is. Oh, and one other thing - that cost is PER PERSON.

And they definitely play upon a mixture of paranoia and hubris...

History has demonstrated that the masses do not take action to prepare, or even to react with self direction in the face of imminent danger. Most people wait for someone of authority to tell them what to do, where to go, and how to think. This was evidenced with reports from survivors of the "911" collapse of the World Trade Center towers, when people were told to “go back upstairs”.  The survivors didn't!  Survivors act on their own and take the security of their life into their own hands, relying on their own instincts, that have always served them well.  These individuals that take control of their own destiny may very well be the proverbial “chosen few”, who have made the personal choice to heed the warnings and prepare for themselves and their families, versus becoming victims.

Oh, and for those who are especially vain, you can be a part of the Vivos Cryovault...

In addition to the Vivos survival shelters that will accommodate thousands of people around the world, Vivos is now preserving the "seeds" of humanity in the world's only nuclear blast-proof, underground cryovault built to survive the next life-extinction event. The Vivos Cryovault expands your opportunity to be a part of the next genesis.  Join us in the Vivos Cryovault gene pool!

Part of me thinks that if these people can make money of the paranoia and vanity of others, then more power to them. As P.T. Barnum said, "There's a sucker born every minute." But there's another part of me that is kinda pissed - this is exactly the type of group that will sucker people who do NOT have disposable income into giving them their life savings. And we all know that this is the type of outfit that will continue to require "additional funding" and "maintenance fees" and "stocking fees" and "membership dues" and any other number of ways to continue to milk the cash cow.

And of course there's no regulations, no oversight on these operations - so there really is no way to ensure that the money they get is being spent on the areas designated. I can almost guarantee you that, if not Vivos, many other companies like this are going to wind up claiming bankruptcy and the executives will "take the money and run", becoming rich off the dreams (nightmares?) of others.

So, I wanted to get some sense of what others here thought of this endeavor and others like it. I encourage you to take a look at the sites linked above, and here's the introductory video you can watch as well.
