A monumentous thing happened to me yesterday.

I was ordained.

I am now a Minister for The Universal Church Triumphant of the Apathetic Agnostic.

It's a simple premise on which to actually base a church... a church is simply a formalised group of people who have basically the same view on God, right? So why not?
The church isn't made up only of people who define themselves as agnostic, there are weak atheists who accept that gods cannot be disproven, and there are apparently also some deists amongst the clergy. To become a member you simply have to accept the three articles of faith:

1. The existence of a Supreme Being is unknown and unknowable.
2. If there is a Supreme Being, then that being appears to act as if apathetic to events in our universe.
3. We are apathetic to the existence or nonexistence of a Supreme Being.

This doesn't mean that we have to be apathetic about the effect that religion has upon our society, we are not apathetic about our agnosticism.

so, can you preside over legal wedding ceremonies now?

I am an ordained reverend in the ULC and I'm an Atheist. I can preform weddings.

I, too, am a ULC minister. I find this concept both incredibly amusing and incredibly disturbing :)

@ Noisician... not yet. I'm in Australia, and it's not a recognised church over here yet. I need to apply for a celebrant's license here first.

and Mike, yes. I quite understand the disparity of the amusing/disturbing thing... it's one of the things that made me want to do it in the first place!

I'm ordained too. A lot of atheists got ordained when it was a popular craze a few years back. Most of them from the Universal life church.

My opinion now? It's a waste of time. Unless you actually plan to perform weddings or something like that, there is no real point. Just empty bragging rights I think.

Empty bragging rights... yep. That's half the fun of it. But the whole Miss/Ms/Mrs think annoys me (I have stuff addressed to all three titles appearing in my mailbox from idiot companies who can't get it right) so now I can legitimately request Rev. at the start of my name and be someone not defined as attached/unattached to a male counterpart.

It's not really that much of a waste if you intend to do something with it, and I have half formed plans for things I'm going to do... whether I will actually get around to them I don't know, but the intent is there.
