Practicing Atheism: How do I become a BETTER Atheist?

As Atheists we don't have a "good book" that dictates our morals,or set standards for us to live by (like we need it anyways). In what ways can I become a more well rounded Atheist?

Well, do unto others as you would have done unto you. It really is that simple. You only need one rule. Common sense sets your morals as a result of living by that maxim. Make sure you enjoy now, cus we don't have later. Just enjoy and be enjoyable. That's really all I think we need.

Also, for fun... just be a better person than anyone person who believes in an eternity and higher power. Don't rub it in, but be an example of a person who chooses the higher ground. Don't download music unless you pay for it. Don't copy software. Don't litter. So on and so forth. Make it known that you do it because its the right thing to do and not because you're supposed to.

Andy when I say "better" Atheist I don't mean as in superior to my fellow Atheists. A better Atheist as in a living an exemplary life, and being an upstanding Atheist.

i got a tattoo yesterday. a gigantic empty set. its on my arm and the ointment that i have to use while healing makes for a very sticky sleeve. so i decided to get some sleeveless shirts for around the house. i walked into the store and right away asked for a sleeveless shirt. i struck up great conversation with the sales lady and eventually it got to "can i see the tattoo... oh what does it mean?" next thing you know... blammo, i dropped the A-bomb on her. i wasnt rude, said it the same way anyone would say "yes, its a verse from psalms". i was just a guy, talking to a peson about something.

you have to be proud. you have to be so proud that its the first thing you want people to know about you. dont be obnoxious, or awkward, but be proud. my entire (very large) family is very evangelical. my 6 year old niece told me earlier today that i better hurry up and get to know jesus. i stand firm in what i believe and have no trouble talking to them about how i feel... and also, how they feel.

the best thing you can do is just make people understand that atheism isnt satanism. show them that you have very strong morals and why you have them. make strong decisions about what you believe and have good reasons to back them up. be an example for and to the human race.

acceptance will come in time. but not without us giving it a nudge. deb, persist with love and kindness. never ever give up on family (though i am sure you know that). i cant say that any of my family agrees with me, but they surely seem more tolerant as years pass and they see that i am a better person now that i ever was before claiming atheism. and you know what, i think its perfectly fine that they want to pray for me, and i let them.... i just opt out at the dinner table.

dont feel so opressed. look on the bright side. atheists could always vote, always get married, and probably owned slaves.

Geez, Gaytor. Wrong towel reference. That was The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy not South Park. Now if I had said,"Don't forget to bring a towel"...

I didn't see that movie so I missed the difference. I'm going in the corner and feeling embarrassed now.
