Pope links atheism, environmental destruction, urges world leaders to act

August 27, 2009

In his Wednesday general audience, Pope Benedict, linking atheism and secularism with environmental destruction, summarized his new encyclical’s teaching on man’s duties towards the environment:

Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where God is marginalized or also where his existence is denied? If the human creature's relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the "final authority," and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible.

Creation, matter structured in an intelligent manner by God, is entrusted to man's responsibility, who is able to interpret and refashion it actively, without regarding himself as the absolute owner. Man is called to exercise responsible government to protect it, to obtain benefits and cultivate it, finding the necessary resources for a dignified existence for all. With the help of nature itself and with the commitment of its own work and creativity, humanity is able to assume the grave duty to hand over to the new generations an earth which, in turn, the latter will be able to inhabit worthily and cultivate further.

The Pontiff urged world leaders “to give the appropriate indications to their own citizens to address in an effective manner the ways of utilizing the environment that turn out to be harmful. The economic and social costs stemming from the use of shared environmental resources, recognized in a transparent way, must be assumed by those who use them, and not by other populations or by future generations.”

There are a lot of disturbing things that have been posted on this website, most of the scary stuff being from fringe groups of religions or just a single outrageous individual. It's terrifying to me to see such a public figure as the pope make a statement like this. Most of the time I would just dismiss this as just some stupid uneducated statement, but clearly this was a targeted statement. This man obviously knew what he was saying with this statement and is making a clear message with it. I can honestly say this is the first time I am truly scared of the religious mind.

I couldn't agree more. I do not have any respect for creation. I have a great deal of respect for nature and only regret that i don't have more money to take advantage of wind mills, solar, and geo thermal heat. in due time.
Fact is, the science division within your church doesn't buy the 6 day creation. So what creation is it that you speak of Pontif?

"Creation, matter structured in an intelligent manner by God, is entrusted to man's responsibility, who is able to interpret and refashion it actively, without regarding himself as the absolute owner."

"Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.'"-Genesis 1:26

Dominion- ".the power or right of governing and controlling; sovereign authority."

i don't see it saying, "but it is not yours. i'm giving you complete dominion over it, although you aren't allowed to consume everything; be discreet"

i mean, who was the bible written for?
honestly the way they go at interpreting the bible, they might as well completely ignore it and make their own rules.
i love it, just saying "sure it SOUNDS like it's saying this, but what it really means is THIS"
as well, looking up arguments against the bible allowing our planet to be raped i found such completely absurd references such as "And if a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey falls in it, the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money to their owner, but the dead beast shall be his."-Exodus 21:33-34, stating that the command was for the protection of the animal, instead of protection over the owner's property.
just... amusing how much they are willing to twist things to make it seem like the bible isn't flawed.
