Petition to remove UNDER GOD from the pledge.

There is a petition that has been started for President Obama and Congress to eliminate UNDER GOD from the pledge. The pledge wasn't written with these words in it and there are many people in this country that are being excluded by that statement. The inclusion of this phrase is highly divisive and unnecessary. Removing this statement will not take religious people's false beliefs from them, but it will cease to force non-believing citizens to recite a false claim. If you would like to sign the petition I have attached a link. Eventually if enough people get behind this petition the government will have no choice but to listen.

Nice, I'm from Chile so I guess that I can't sign that petition, but I wish you the best luck on it.

I now refuse to pledge my allegiance to a nation, under god or otherwise. In high school I was a little more patriotic, and so said the pledge without the "under god" part. Some people substitute "under law," I have heard. I would care about our money, but I hardly ever use cash anymore, and my bank card fortunately makes no mention of any deity. I believe it would be political suicide for anyone to get rid of "under god," and don't think it will happen, despite the many religious groups and nontheistic groups who would support a secular pledge.

I also tell my children that they have the right to not say the pledge if they wish. They can just stand and remain quiet.

I don't see UNDER GOD being removed anytime soon, but it will never get removed unless people begin to petition the government to do so. Every change in the status quo has began as a long shot, but eventually enough support is rallied and change occurs. For years people thought segregation would never end, but it happened. Ten years ago nobody thought that gays would ever be given any support, but now we have a president that has expressed that he feels they should have equal rights. The entire country doesn't need to become atheist to gain enough support to make our government more secular. We will never gain support from others until we support the issues within the atheist community.

As a Canadian, I also demand that "God keep our land" be removed from our national anthem.
