So some idiot posted on a forum about atheists having a "Church."
He proceeded to say how atheists are ignorant, they are going against their beliefs (wut?) and that they are being hypocrites by creating a church dedicated to atheism.

so I went to the website of this church to see what some foolish atheists were doing. (some of them give each other a bad name.)

I get to a website that talks about setting up an organization to share common interests, which is atheism.

I do not see the word church anywhere on the entire website.

So does this mean that a group of people sharing a common interest automatically mean it's a church?

I guess flocks of birds should now be called churches. So should pods of whales, schools of fish and herds of deer. No more flocking, podding, schooling and herding. it's now CHURCHING.

YEEEEY.

(ps: I know animals dont really have anything to do with it, but I thought it sounded funny. churching!)

I thought about starting an atheist church here in Arizona just so I can get tax breaks and the legal ability to do Peyote.

I perform my services without tax breaks or charity. Everythin' I do comes out of my pocket. Whenever I do receive a donation (which is a real rarity) I spend it on food for the poor.

I don't belong to a secular church, but I'm with Ann Druyan that secularism needs good songs.

The term "Atheist Church" is an oxymoron.

That's my first inclination as well -- I don't belong to one -- but it might be good shorthand for a social gathering of likeminded people to celebrate wonder and joy (at life or the universe, say), with music, fellowship, etc. If atheists are to reclaim wonder and awe (as we should) -- could we not also reclaim/coöpt terminology? Thoughts?

I don't see the point in using the term 'church', any more than using 'temple', 'mosque', 'shrine', 'tabernacle', 'cathedral', or 'abbey'.

I'd rather use society, group, league, association, or the like.
