Oh my God!
A childless Indian man sliced off his tongue as an offering to the god Shiva in the hope of becoming a father.
Police said 28-year-old Mukesh Kumar chopped off his tongue with a razor blade at a temple in the state of Uttar Pradesh dedicated to the Hindu god.
Mr Kumar, from a village in Banda district around 125 miles from the city of Lucknow, was taken to a private hospital by other devotees.
Doctors said he is out of danger, but would probably suffer from major speech problems later, police said.
Senior inspector R P Mishra added that Mr Kumar remained childless after more than four years of marriage.
He added: "An ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, an angry Kumar left his house following a tiff with his wife for not being able to conceive. He went to the temple, where he offered his tongue to the deity."

I cannot fathom this kind of faith. Ne, ignorance. Is this the result of not educating people about science? This man should have known that gods don't determine fertility. I'm at a loss for words. I only feel like hurtling insults at this persons intelligence and his religion.

Pillai, are you from India? I've heard India has the second best (after MIT) university of engineering sciences in the world, but I'm wondering what the situation is with biology.
Gaytor, why would you be angry at the guy who did this? I mean, of all the things this guy could have done to please Shiva, cutting of his tongue is probably one of the most moral ones (because he didn't cause any harm to others), albeit a stupid one. It seams that the real culprits here are a lack of education and social pressure (correct me on this one, but I don't think childlessness is looked upon favorably in the majority of India). If anything, I pity the guy, and could almost give him praise for going to such lenghts to concieve a hier.

It's difficult for me to put myself in the shoes of an Indian person living in India. That being said, I'm indignant at the idea that he couldn't have or shouldn't have known. But I'll certainly cop to not understanding the culture or current quality of life of this particular person which I would need to know for a proper/accurate reaction. I am placing my value and life experience judgement on it and concur with the potential shortcomings of that. I assume that's where you were going.

this man deserves no praise for going to such lenghts man. so whats your views on the scum that blow themselves up in afghan, killing our brave armed forces fighting for the fucking freedoms you sit on your ass for.
the lenghts those boys will go to for a few virgins man. COME ON MAN .
anyway the man from india would have been better slicing his throat, there is no saving such people.
