So I've got some scars on my right hand from multiple reconstruction surgeries. The first runs across the top of my wrist from ulna to radius and makes it look like my hand has been sewn on. The stitches themselves scarred as well, adding to the rather Frankenstein's monster effect.
There is another smaller one just above it, about a third of the way up my hand, too. I generally hide these with my Think Atheist bracelets, but I still get a lot of questions about them. Even though they are on the BACK of my hand and wrist, I've had many inquiries if they were self inflicted and/or suicide attempts as well as people asking if they are design oriented scarification or branding (The stitch pattern is very obvious and quite straight, making it look rather intentional or designed.
I've been considering getting them inked over for a long time now, if I can find someone skilled enough to go over the scar tissue. Random designs or well spaced, small characters would probably look best considering the pattern already in place. One of the ideas that came to me was to have the preamble of the U.S Constitution done in a copy-cat script of the original document.

Opinions? Suggestions?

barbed wire seems to be a popular tat.

Wear the scars as if they were a tattoo. Ink up another part of your body.
<- Likes scars.

Randy's favorite love scene was in Lethal Weapon 3 when Mel Gibson and Rene Russo were comparing scars before getting hot and heavy.

I've got plenty of other scars. Two deep nasty ones across left hip from an ATV racing accident, another one up my leg from hockey game, a stab (complete with tip exit wound) on one shoulder, a mangled pinkie finger and knee from a motorcycle accident (though I actually have a forearm again!) and various ship-kisses from wreck diving in just a board shorts and rash vest...though not as many as you'd expect from a person who dives mostly-naked into a large pile of sharp, twisted metal. (Most of my friends that wear full protective gear are worse. I've been known to go in without even any gloves and come out without a mark on me...)
The ones on my hand/wrist are ten years old for the big one and two years old for the small one. They are both surgical scars, so perfectly straight and the big one has perfectly straight stitch mark scars on it, too. They don't look particularly cool like the others. I don't feel like I earned them because they are the result of calcium deposits that spread the bones apart, had to be sawed off, the bones rewired and some pins put in. No cool accident... just broke that hand a lot of times. Like I said, the final surgery was two years ago, so if I did decide to do something with it, now's the time.
I liked the idea of having the Preamble of the Constitution done because the best cover up would be small, broken up bits... like words. I've seen some amazing Blessing/Prayer tattoos in Thailand that monks do with bamboo... and really like the look of it. Only being atheist, having a prayer or blessing seems a bit.. I dunno.. dumb? The Preamble would be thoughtful, patriotic (since I'm often an American in a foreign country, but without the stigma of the flag, eagles, right-wing-fundie-stuff) and intelligent. Oh, the scars will absorb black ink the best, so that was another reason...
Doug- Thanks for the suggestion.. Barbed wire won't be big enough, I'm afraid. It has to go from my wrist to half way down my hand. I've also never really been a fan of getting the same tat everyone else has.
I've got 16 hours of work from my upper thigh to all the way up my upper ribcage; hip and stomach in between. The very large piece was custom designed by me and the artist to fit with the lines of my body and project the image I wanted....To fit the space on my wrist and hand, it's going to have to be sort of a triangle shape, or parallelogram..that's why I thought script would be a good idea....

I like the Preamble idea. The First Amendment might be a good one as well.

Dave-
I <3 you. We always seem to be on the same page. Only problem is, I have tiny hands and wrists. My wrists are four inches diameter. To put the first Amendment in, I'd probably have to have it reach down to my knuckles...which I might just do.
Dunno yet.. still need to find an artist...talk to a dermatologist to be sure the ink will take good enough.. you know, do my homework. When or if, I'll be sure to post pics.
Neal-
After much attempt, all the yoga practice in the world will still not allow me to take a picture that will encompass the entire piece. Sorry. I might take a mirror shot in a bikini at some point, but it will have to warm up in this country first!
