MY TOP 5 MOVIES THAT HAVE AN UN-HOLLYWOOD ENDING
*NOTE 1* This can be taken as anything relating to the good guys losing, bad guys winning, nobody winning. Basically a non-Hollywood ending/ Non-Disney happy ending.
*NOTE 2* There is no particular order to the list.
*NOTE 3* I understand there are many other films that could make this list more than a top 5 could encompass. That being said this is in no way a down mark on other fine films not listed.
5.) The Way of the Gun (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202677/ ) – In the movie there were no good guys, just a varying degree of bad guys. In the end the bad guys you are kind of pulling for end up with nothing.
*On a side note, this movie has one of the best opening scenes ever.
4.) No Country for Old Men (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0477348/) – A great chase movie where you are pulling for the hero to get away with the money, yet reality creeps in and the drug dealers hired goon kills everyone involved with the drug deal gone wrong.
*On a side note, Chigurh (Javier Bardem) is one of the best movie villains ever IMHO.
3.) American History X (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120586/) – Just an all around great movie. The main character swinging from his hate filled youth to a young man full of regent and wasted time. Just a shitty ending (not bad as filmed but the way it went down) with his younger brother being shot dead. Killed from the hate he helped spawn.
*On a side note, one of my favorite quotes comes from this movie: “Has anything you’ve done made your life better?”
2.) They Live (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0096256/) – Cool concept for a movie (alien takeover of Earth but humans are unaware. Use of hypnotic controls and covert propaganda) but delivered in a B horror movie style. The ending has the hero being shot and killed by the villains (aliens) but he does destroy the antenna that is masking the aliens’ presence on Earth. It ends as that with no knowledge of if the humans fight back or if the aliens just start killing everyone.
*On a side note the film has one of the all time classic fight scenes (about a 5 minute fist fight). It is spoofed in South Parks Epsd. “Cripple Fight” between Timmy and Jimmy.
1.) The Butterfly Effect (Alt. Ending) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0289879/) – I know the Hollywood released ending has him just tell the little girl something horrible to have her move away thus saving everyone from him. The ending they tested and did not release (except on DVD/ Blu-Ray) has him watch a home movie (like his dad did to travel back in time) of his birth and then proceeds to choke himself to death with the umbilical cord. There is a point earlier in the movie where the mother reveals that there were 2 stillborns before he was born.
*On a side note Amy Smart was fucking amazing in her role and should have won some sort of accolade for it.

American History X is one of my favorite movies! The Butterfly Effect is also equally good, one of Ashton Kutcher's best I'd say.
The others I haven't seen. I tried to watch No Country for Old Men a few time and always fell asleep lol :)

They Live! is one of my favorites. I just watched it again the other day. I watch that fight scene and I can't believe they keep getting up after being knocked down and hitting concrete.

I hate to sound so Hollywood, but i love the end of the Departed when Leo was shot. I mean who saw that coming!!!

The only ending I remember for The Butterfly Effect was the one in which he travels back in time and ends his life in the womb. Maybe I only watched the director's cut.

The Mist was another surprise and realistic ending.That was the one that shocked me the most.

Glad to see a Coen Brothers film in the list. Their first movie “Blood Simple” was certainly not Hollywood. All great characters but all were sleaze bags with no redeeming features. Also great camera work. One of my fav films.

No Country for Old Men is definitely on my list, too. So is the book. I was never into the whole butterfly effect movie and sequels, but if you haven't yet, I'd recommend the movie, Mr. Nobody, my all times favourite.

How is CHINATOWN not on this list? If you haven't seen it, you need to drop what you're doing and watch that film immediately. Or A CLOCKWORK ORANGE? Or SPARTACUS???
A few others I think are missing: Rocky, Angels with Dirty Faces, Requiem for a Dream, In Bruges, Fallen, Gladiator, Godfather Part II, Empire Strikes Back, The Thing, the China Syndrome... I'm sure I'll think of more later, but there was also a period of Hollywood where it was the trend to have dark endings. It was called Film Noir. You should check that period out. I'm sure you'd find a lot to like. I like the Coen brothers earlier stuff. Miller's Crossing is a much better dark ending imo.

To Robert Karp, Ryan E. Hoffman. Note #3 on my post indicates there are tons of movies I could have listed. I just did a quick hip shot, 5 list.
Rob, I am with you on The Departed. The Leo shooting and Matt D getting shot by Marky Mark was awesome.
Ryan, yeah I love a lot of the movies you listed and Fallen was going make the quick list but it got bumped by "They Live", Empire Strikes Back as well.

To Bryan B: The Mist, uhhh I forgot about that one. The ending in that movie was so dark. Funny but the books ending was different I am told. I read somewhere that Stephen King liked the movie ending better than his.
