My sister is making me go to church, help please?

My 20 year old sister is forcing me a 16 year old, to go to church because I am an Atheist (well humanist),and she claims she knows more on the subject than me. Her words on Christopher Hitchens were "He was just mad at God because he had cancer" and Carl Sagan "Devil Worshiper" I did not mention Richard Dawkins because she might have said something more ignorant....But she is making me go to "find all the answers and restore my faith in God". Do I go? Do I absolutely refuse? (Tried that actually resulted in "your a minor you have no choice"), or Do I "forget" and sleep in? Either way, I need advice also, if she makes me go, do I stand up and point out all the fallacies or do I just sit there and ignore every ignorant word? Edit: and NOW she wants to make me join a Youth Group! Dear Flying Spaghetti monster please guide me with your noodly appendage through this train wreck of crap my sister is making me do!

lol, if you're the type to wish to be upfront and in your face, you could raise your hand every 10 seconds and ask lots of questions about why something doesn't make sense...

Or you could just sit there and ignore every word.

Or you could treat it as an educational experience, if you haven't ever attended church services before?

I was raised a Southern Baptist, and I became a Humanist. I was sent to church almost every sunday. I have been and even then I would sit and think "wait that makes no sense".

Go, pay attention, learn something. You don't have to agree with it. I still go to church on VERY rare occasion....mainly if my mom's in town and it's a holiday (it means a lot to her that I go, even though she knows I'm not a Christian).

And your sister obviously knows nothing about Hitchens. He was an atheist long before he had cancer.

Sign up for something on Sunday mornings. They're out there. Even volunteer. Anything to keep those Sunday mornings too busy for church. It worked for me (pro-tip: HAVE BACK-UPS!)

What are the supposed consequences if you refuse to go?

Also, I think it's cool that she thinks so highly of Christopher Hitchens.  I mean, he was clearly an atheist well before he was diagnosed with cancer, so, if he was an atheist because of his cancer, the man must have been a bloody damn good psychic.

Learning about religion really strengthened me an Atheist. But if you really do not want to go, I would not.

How does she "make" you go- is she your legal guardian?

Unless she is your legal guardian, in which case I would recommend going as cheerfully as possibly, I say go to work, go to the gym, go to the library, go hiking, etc.  My church is nature, and my Christian family seems to be ok with that - but as far as church goes, personally, I can no longer sit through the babbling nonsense that comes out of "ministers'" blow holes.

The best way to solve this problem is to use the 12 step Mental Health of Atheism program. Make  your sister go with you to twelve services of twelve FaithPsychosis Religious Beliefs adding the Awakening 13 as the last. This would create an impact.

.....i,e go to a Islam service, a Jewish Service, A catholic Service, a Mormon service, a Jeowahs Witness service, a Hindu service ( anyone of the hundreds they have), a Wicca service, a Satanic Service, a Shaman service, an Spirituals Seance service, an ESP reader service, a Buddhist Service, a Yoga meditations Service..then for the last service go to a Mental institutions & ask to discuss the meaning of GOD ( aka imaginary friends) with a schizophrenic intellectual.

After all of that, GO with your sister to her church...then she'll understand the ZombieGodSyndrome producing her belief in GOD is a neurological disorder just like all the others...God is a creation of malfunctioning brains. Only children & the ignorant have an excuse.

All the best, give it a try.

Well usually I hand my family members my copy of The God Delusion and say my stance is very clear within this book and or I have a 'debate' more of a discussion really but I enjoy a civilized debate with family members that are rational and accepting. I'm 20 myself. I know more about Catholicism then anyone else in my family and extended family (often my younger cousins come to me for help with religion class homework or questions about Theology or even my Atheist views). For the more irrational side of my family I have more of a 'I know more about your religion then you do' discussion as long as it's a discussion or debate and ignorance isn't involved. From the sounds of the short description of your situation 1. You probably know more then your sister does about her religion because 2. she sounds like everything she knows about her religion is because she herd it from someone and failed to study it herself. I would absolutely say you aren't going to a youth group based around faith and maybe go to church and just don't participate (that's what I do when our family goes). In the beginning that will spark some emotions though but that gives you a clear opportunity press her with questions and discussion. My favorite line to die hard Catholics is ask them why Greek Mythology is wrong and or what's so special about Jesus since he his story is very very close to Horus and Mithra. Sorry for the long post but I've been through all this and managed to break through to everyone in my family including my die hard family members. Feel free to message me, if you want, with questions or such. I'm sure I can help.

I don't understand.  What power does your sister hold over you?
