A rant I made at a google+ post comment, I think this is my best yet & I've copied it verbatim. If you want to check out the post, here is the link.
Edit - You can't check the google+ post as it seems the OP has deleted it. Shame, it had some of my best comments :(
No one here is persecuting christians, but rather bashing(well I am) christian beliefs, the bible & religion in general. The funny thing is that you're right there is a difference between what a religion preaches & what most of it's followers do. One problem is that it's probably too confusing to figure out what god wants you to do. There are so many contradictions in the bible, how do you know which one to choose? Maybe your god was trolling with you by getting different bible writers to write contradicting stuff, who know.
But when you get down to it, it's the fundies who are really following the letter of the law as laid down by their god. The rest are just ignoring it. Their morality has bested their religion & yet they keep themselves shackled to a religion which they are clearly better than.
And about keeping honor & respect, it's the religious fundamentalists all over the world trying to get crazy stuff from the religion to get passed as the law. I find it really annoying that it's illegal for me to eat beef here. And I really really hate the fact that religious organizations enjoy tax exemptions, that is bullshit. I wouldn't have much of a problem with religion if it were kept out of politics & policy. You believe in imaginary beings? Fine, keep it to yourbloodyself. Don't expect me to respect such nonsense & don't get offended when I poke fun at those beliefs, just as you would at someone who in all earnest worships invisible flying pigs that fart out rainbow & then justifies their existence by the existence of rainbows. Yes, I find your beliefs to be equivalent to invisible flying pigs that fart out rainbows.
I would have even less of a problem with religion if children weren't indoctrinated into that bullshit, pretty much from birth.
You want to take up religion to find comfort because the realities of life too much for you? Fine, just know that I equate that to someone taking to the bottle or drugs to escape those realities. Don't think of it as a virtue that you seeked out religion because life was getting too hard. That's the same as kids building up imaginary worlds & friends & stories to escape certain things, but only worse. They are kids, they are supposed to believe in imaginary things, what is your excuse? Oh wait, right...
What do you think? Too excessive?
