Here's something that's annoyed me for a while. It came up again in a couple of places in quick succession lately - once in an episode of Bones, I forget the other - so I thought it was about time to try explaining what exactly it is that pisses me off so much.

It's about the assertion that life, or fate, or God, or whatever, "never gives us more than we can handle".

I think it's a phrase that's supposed to be comforting to someone going through hard times, to reassure them that life is still beautiful and magical and worth living despite the pain and suffering of, say, losing a loved one. It's often argued further that pain and suffering is what gives life the capacity to be beautiful and magical in the first place. So there's no need to be scared. There's a purpose to it all.

And the finding of beauty and magic and purpose to life isn't something I have a big problem with. When it comes to life, broadly speaking, I'm in favour; and there's plenty of wonder in my own world to make it an amazing journey, even for someone as atheistic and materialistic as I am.

The problem is...

I was once a born-again, ex-homo, Christian. I went back to gay after about a year, moved to San Francisco 1977 & had 10 YEARS of good friends, parties, freedom.
Then AIDS hit & SF became a nightmare. My friends died horribly slow deaths. I'm HIV+ and was OK with that, thinking I'd join my buddies in death.
But I lived. And never got sick. So instead of leaving this planet, I had to deal with enormous grief.
I TURNED TO BOOZE and drank for 15 years. 2 years ago while drunk, I fell, got a bloody concussion.... didn't know i had 2 black eyes until morning.
RATIONAL RECOVERY worked for me = no cult like A.A. - no "higher power" crap. I'm OK now.
My point = I was given way more than I could handle. A wise god would have known that. A compassionate god wouldn't have given me that much sorrow in a short time.

I would point to 1000's of suicides every year and say, Whatch talkn 'bout Willis?

The problem is is that humans CAN handle rather a lot. Should we be put through it just because we can handle it? I don't think so. I think it's cruel and unnecessary.

Gaytor, unfortunately, they'd point to those sucides and say that 'they were not given more than they could handle, they just were weak and didn't trust God and Jesus enough, that's why Satan was able to make them kill themselves'. They are experts at twisting facts into whatever shape is needed to fit their beliefs.
