A 12-year-old Christian girl was kidnapped and repeatedly raped for eight months in Pakistan by a man who then falsified marriage documents with her, it was claimed today.

The girl was lured on a shopping trip in Lahore by a friend, before she was driven 120 miles to Tandianwalla and raped by the friend's uncle in January this year.

Two days later, she was forced to sign papers consenting to marriage with the man and beaten for refusing to convert from Christianity to Islam.

She was then held against her will for eight months, before managing to escape and contact her family.

The Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) has said the rapists have not been arrested because of their affiliation with a militant Muslim organisation - the Lashkar-e-Tayyaba.

It claims the police have refused to order a medical check-up on the girl, and have warned her parents that it would be better for them to hand over the girl to her 'legal' husband or a criminal case would be filed against them.

An investigation into the kidnapping found the girl's father reported her disappearance in January and made complaints against her abductors, but police took no action for eight months.

Last month, the girl - who has not been named for legal reasons - called her family from Tandianwalla and told them she had been abducted, but had escaped and was hiding at a bus stop.

The girl's parents travelled to the town and rescued her, before taking her to a local magistrate to give a statement.

The rapists then contacted the police through their religious group and produced a marriage certificate that claimed to show one of them was married to the 12-year-old.

As a result of their complaint, the Christian family has gone into hiding as members of Lashkar-e-Tayyaba are searching for them.

The group claims the girl is pregnant, but her mother has denied this is true.

The AHRC said that police never asked the religious group how a 12-year-old could be married. The legal age for marriage in Pakistan in 16.

It claims the Punjab provincial government is patronising banned militant organisations.

The British Pakistani Christian Association has launched a petition calling on the Pakistani government to investigate the attack.

Ugh! This is why I say that anyone who thinks that Christianity OR Islam has any respect for females has their head on backwards!

What's so sad is that (at least in Christianity) the majority of religious believers are female - even though the Church authorities are OVERWHELMINGLY male.

Women have more of an excuse than anyone to flip the bird at religion. FUCK RELIGION!

One of the reasons I left one of the three "peaceful" monotheisms is because I concluded that God is a sadistic, unmerciful, woman-hating bastard. That's the impression I have gotten from Islam too.

Islam or Christianity.... this girl is doomed to a life of hating her own body for as long as she is part of a monotheistic religion.... btw... Judaism isn't much better.... the whole idea that a woman's menstrual cycle and birth process is deemed "unclean" rather than the wonder (I refuse to use the word "miracle") of nature it is, shows an appalling lack of respect for the greatest power of women.... creating life.

Yep... sadly this story doesn't surprise me in any way. It is no wonder for me that a lot of very religious men are sexist when their holy book is dripping with misogyny!

Even more appalling is that in the Bible there is a passage that condones as righteous what this man did... the only mistake he made (according to the passage) was not paying the girl's father for "humbling" the father's property.

Deuteronomy -

22:28 If a man find a damsel that is a virgin, which is not betrothed, and lay hold on her [in my copy it says "force her down"], and lie with her,and they be found;
22:29 Then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

I don't think Christianity is so much sexist anymore - that distinction lays indisputably with Islam.

Oh, most of Christianity is not AS sexist as Islam. (The Polygamous sects of fundamentalist protestantism and mormonism are pretty much the same as Islam in their treatment of women... Read Book: God's Brothel.)

But, most of Christianity is still sexist... it's just "hidden." I once was a Christian and I remember that in most churches women are taught from childhood that they are sinful by the very nature of what their bodies look like.

Fundamentalist Christianity has made their position on a "woman's place" clear. They have done all they can to make independence difficult for women. Although feminism seems to be winning at last - a secular movement, the attitudes of misogyny are still rank in the air.

In the American Christian world... if a child turns out to be an apostate or a homosexual or gets in trouble with the law... then the child's mother is blamed for being a bad parent.

Rape victims find slightly more comfort here... but the circumstances in which one is raped will determine whether the victim will be comforted or blamed. While most Americans are comforting of women brutally raped by a stranger... that type of rape is the most uncommon one. [22%]

One in every three American women are raped in their lifetime...  of that, 29% happen when the girl is less than eleven, and 32% between the ages of 11 and 17. The fact that rape is so prevalent in a supposedly "modern" country is alarming.

The saddest part is that the Christian church doesn't appear to make a distinction between fornication and rape. In both cases, the woman is (usually implicitly) branded a sinner. Some Christian men will not marry a rape victim because she is (technically) not a virgin.

Less than 20% of rapes are ever reported to the police... because of the stigma that goes with it. Unless the rapist was a de-ranged stranger (usually he is not), society plays "blame the victim" and the woman is told that "she seduced him" or "you let him buy you a drink," among other BS.

No doubt! The situation is worse in the middle east... but my point was that whether misogyny is explicit or implicit, a lot of it seems to stem from religion.
