This is a bad argument. Religious people believe that their god put them on the planet for a specific purpose and/or reason, so of course they can believe in their personal "blessings" or "god-given talents". Exactly because god is a man-made creation is why people can bend its will to believe anything they want.

This is not a question of, "What if there REALLY IS a god in the sky that controls or manipulates all things". As an atheist, you should really know better. Personal delusions are there for a reason; to comfort, console, to lessen fear, and to explain away things people don't understand. The question you've raised should really be left for the theologists and their ilk.

Admittedly, I find it annoying, too. It takes a large set of stones to claim that they were "blessed", and therefore chosen above all others in their practice, to BE better.
