Last night on Fox Business Channel John Stossel had a show covering god and religion. Michael Shermer and Lawrence Krauss (I think) were on the panel along with a couple theists. Shermer and the astrophysicist made several excellent points. Stossel is an agnostic and I thought the show was beneficial for atheists. The one main point that Stossel made for religion is that it is responsible for the majority of charitable actions towards those less fortunate in life and that theists are much more willing to donate charitable funds to causes. He also did illuminate the downside of religion as well: Islamic jihadists, the Crusades, witch burnings, and Aztec sacrifices. The most important point to me was that science was shown to be a changing field of study, constantly updated, and that religion is mired in ancient texts that don't correctly reflect our growing understanding of the universe.
