Is this just cuckoo? Is this just the radical opposite of what trump is doing?

Like the old days...student activism has come back with a vengence. On the BBC:

Harvard abolishes 'master' in titles in slavery row

Harvard University in the US is going to remove the word "master" from academic titles, after protests from students who claimed the title had echoes of slavery.

House masters, in charge of residential halls at the university, will become known as "faculty deans".

Harvard Law School is also deciding whether to change its official seal, because of links to slavery.

US campuses have faced a series of protests over allegations of racism.

Harvard has not agreed that the use of "master" represented a link to slavery, but it has accepted campaigners' calls for a name change.

It will mean changing the job titles of 24 members of staff - but will not affect other uses of "master", such as a master's level degree.

Harvard academics say that the word "master" derives from the Latin term "magister" - a form of address for scholars or teachers. It is similar to terms such as "school master" or "head master".

This is an example of the recent discussion here. An example of postmodern militants on university campuses in Candad, US and UK indeed.

I vote: totally cuckoo.

@White people being called names

As a white person the word cracker doesn't offend just about anyone. As male...when lesbians refer to me and other men as walking penis''s not offensive. Why? Because it isn't caught up in systematic discrimination and the recent barbarous-brutal treatment of one group. We are almost never excluded, never beaten up, never assumed the criminals, never insulted for not being normal (white western men).

Faggot...that recalls young boys committing suicide in highschool because they are called fags every day and bashed into their lockers. I can't imagine a white Australian doing the same even if they were called top-decks a dozen times a day.

N*g**r...recalls black people not let into clubs and discos, stuck in the shitty schools, disproportionately being shot by police, having to work twice as hard to get a head...and a not so recent role of slaves in one of the most gruesome way possible. I'm not sure white Australians suffered something like this except maybe when some of the pioneers were prisoners...and you can be sure that stigma doesn't last to this day or limit white Australians in any way.

I suppose someone cannot understand how hearing a term like faggot, n*gg*er or whore effects a homosexual, black person or mistreated woman ... especially when they suffer discrimination and/or insults constantly. You can say a word like niggardly if you want, no one will stop you, but considering just about no one knows what it means let alone says it, and that there are identical synonyms to use, and as it sounds just like another grossly offensive word and you are an elected politician: I can't imagine someone being that overtly and knowingly insensitive. They say it without knowing. The politician shouldn't have lost his job after the apology. Censorship isn't the answer. Though you're a total insensitive jerk if you knowingly use it.

I wasn't referring to you...but to post-modern babel.

As for hand-waving post-modernists...I only hand wave the nonsense arguments made by post-modernists...not everything they say (of course). Dr. Bob had interesting ideas on some moral issues and helped me understand why someones theories about black holes were bad ones. However...on religion and metaphysics...considering he never defined anything and would never let us arrive at a crossroad where we could objectively test or critique his statements...then a hand-wave is all it deserves. If his comments weren't so fun and incendiary...they would have been ignored.

Should have thought of this sooner... for those who haven't seen this one yet.

About the *i*ger word... )

I agree with Matt that blogs are for shit when it comes to responding in any sort of organized way. I wouldn't mind if the ability to blog was removed entirely from TA. In fact, I propose it. If there is some reason to keep it, I'm listening for the reason the site needs it.

"Fagot" is pronounced exactly the same as "faggot." At least in English it is.

I agree with Hitchens assuming he is referring mostly to the French deconstructionists like Derrida. I often wonder if there is any FRENCH philosophy post-Sartre that is actually interesting.
