Hello, Think Atheist! I've finally plucked up the guts to join, after months of reading the blogs and forums and acquainting myself with atheism in general. I live in southwest Virginia, and for the most part I love it here. I'm in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and beautiful views abound. However, this is the same Virginia that houses Bob Marshall and Governor Bob McDonnell, and is perilously close to the Bible Belt, if it isn't part of it already.

I don't have any deconversion story to share. I think that I've always been an atheist, even when my family started going to church somewhat regularly (it was a very liberal United Methodist church--very cool people, just not my beliefs). However, I have yet to "come out" in so many words to most people, but I have a feeling my family and one friend have pieced together my nonreligious standpoint, probably due to my not-so-private personal opinions and views.

Even though really I dislike them, I have to thank the absurdly religious people in my neck of the woods, though. Without the recent assault on my secular sensibilities, I would have never joined this site!

Welcome to Think Atheist! By the way, Virginia is definitely in the Bible Belt.

Thanks for the welcomes.
@Aric: I have suspected as much for a while now, but I suppose living in a somewhat suburban area, as opposed the the more rural places around, it was less obvious (actually, I hadn't tuned in to the religious stuff around before a few years ago). And from how people here talk, only SOUTHERN Virginia is the "real" VA, it makes it seem that northern Virginia is some foreign state from New England (oh, no!). :)

Welcome to the site Jordan!

That area of the state has some beautiful views. I did a cruise on the Blue Ridge Parkway once, and the vistas were wonderful. Glad you found the site and hope to see you around.

Welcome, Jordan. Make sure you have enough baby-eating experience before you start really mingling with us :P
