Internet Thinks Negatively of Atheism

Possibly useless piece of information...

I found this tool online that lets you type in any word and it tells you, through a search engine of your choice (mine is google :P) how the internet feels about a certain topic. I typed in atheism, and, well:

To be honest, I was surprised. While I expect general negativity among general public (especially since I live in the Bible Belt) I kinda thought the internet was full of mostly atheist liberals like myself. Why do you think this is? Are Christian online forums becoming more popular? For whatever reason I feel like quoting Family Guy in..."Oh dear God, Lois, it's learning tools!!"

First of all I don't really know how accurate this website really is. At the bottom of the page the number of results used to make the calculations was posted.

This result was based on 2,039 results from 14 individual searches.

There have to be more than just 2039 results when you search google for atheism. So I searched atheism on google & got this -

About 11,100,000 results

So this website doesn't really search all of the internet does it?

I did a search using other search engines & the results were pretty skewed -

  • Yahoo - 66.2% positive from 1543 results.
  • Bing - 49.4% positive from 1,262,177 results.
  • Google + Yahoo - 48.3% positive from 3468 results.
  • All - 49.4% positive from 1,265,759 results - Its skewed because there are way more results from bing than from Google & Yahoo.

So doesn't look like most of the internet hates on atheism, just top results from google do, or so this website says.

Any ways I wouldn't be too bothered about what the majority of the internet thinks. Atheists are a huge minority in the world & by extension, are a minority on the internet. Also, people who make the most noise on the internet are almost always the trolls. There opinion doesn't really count for much.

The results for "atheist", however, are much better at 64.4% positive from Google, and a staggering 99.9% Positive using all. I'm guessing whatever algorithm they use to determine positive vs. negative needs some work...

well done research :-) now i plugged in atheist instead of atheism, and the result was a stunning
99.9% with 1,064,074 results using the all option. But looking at the consistency of the results, i would agree with Akshay Bist , the site may not be providing accurate results..

Go to YouTube and you'll find countless pro-atheist vids. The hardcore Christian ones get flagged, spammed and get thumbs down a lot. I think that although 'officialy' a lot of people in the world are religious, Christianity is like a default for people with no preference but born in a Christian country.

Turns out Jesus and the Devil rank about the same in the 90th percentile. (That was my experience in the church also, whether outward or hidden) So this thing is 100% accurate. I'm sure of it. *eye roll* is funny though.

Clearly inaccurate. Bing search for Newt Gingrich is 100%.

You haven't spent much time on reddit if you think the internet is atheist hostile.
