Interesting interview on Fresh Air in which Gabriel Byrne reveals what life was like growing up religious....

This interview is interesting...It is not only a revealing look at growing up in Dublin in a strict religious community, but it also reminds us just how damaging and dangerous the practice of celebacy can be.

I listened to that yesterday, it was really fascinating. There is one thing he said that was a little misleading. Yes the Catholic Church did stop allowing priests to marry in the 11th century, but even before then they were supposed to remain celebate, even if married.

Still not condoning the church on this one, I find it incredible that priests are supposed to counsel couples when they have zero experience themselves, and the concept of celibacy is entirely disgusting.

Thanks for the comment, Chompernuts! I was wondering about that part of his narrative, too. I don't remember hearing that priests were told to go ahead and enjoy/have sex EVER.
