"If God didn't exist, Atheists wouldn't exist."

I hear this now and again from religious people, especially Christians. It was going around on Twitter today. Apparently a few people found it pretty profound.   It's superficial and designed to sound clever, esoterical and wise. It's also, indirectly an argument from authority. God exists and that's that.  Of course it's has no logic and is pure nonsense.  It might better be inverted to say Atheists wouldn't need to exist if there was a God.

I sometimes wonder if there's any point responding to such verbal emptiness.

Thank God for making me an atheist

And no, there isn't really a point to answering

A beautifully crafted example of circular reasoning. Meaning it's absolute drivel. ;D

The most generous reading I can give to that saying is that it is confounding the belief in something with the subject of belief. In the sense that it is true that if there were no concept of god, there would be no atheists.

OTOH, even that would not be true by our understanding of the definition of atheist (without belief in a god). No matter how you interpret the phrase, anyone that finds that profound is probably too stupid to use reason.

agree with rose and gold guy's points. to rephrase gold guy's point about "belief": without theism there would be no atheism.

The statement doesn't stand up to logic. It isn't worth the electronic paper it's written on.

Either God exists or doesn't.

Whether god (any god) exists or not, I am still an atheist, and I certainly do exist, as do many others as is proven here.

If god does exist, then we are all wrong, but we are still atheists, just awaiting proof. Otherwise, we are right, and will continue to be atheists, defiant in the face of the continuing bullshit.

I'm still waiting.

"If there existed an omnipotent, omniscient and omnibenevolent entity, it would be an atheist"
That is of course not logically sound, but these people don't seem to be much into logic.
