So I work at a bank. And at this bank there are well, rules and regulations and policies etc. And obviously one rule is be courteous to the customers. Easy enough for me I'm a nice person. Well I helped a lady today and after I finished her transaction she commented on my hair. I style my hair in a faux-hawk. She had said "I'm glad my children never did anything crazy like that. They read their bible everyday and don't have any tattoos either," and pointed at my hair "they follow the teachings in the bible. If you read the bible it says that your body belongs to god and you shouldn't damage it in any way, read your bible everyday ok?" Now what I wanted to say was "look lady, I dont read the bible, never have never will, and contrary to your single-minded beliefs about how non-believers are 'inhuman-beasts,' Im not a drug addict, I've never tried drugs and I've never been in trouble with the law. All that was accomplished without your bible." But of course I like my job and didnt say that and well I didnt really know what to say back except have a nice day. Just love those days. Anyone else been in that position and it just kills you that you cant respond with what your thinking? Any other day I would have spoke up but alas, I need my job.
Comment by Alice Browne on September 1, 2011 at 11:17am Smile and nod and wish her a nice day. You did the right thing as a professional. In the case of Matt's girlfriend, though, that idiot crossed a line by grabbing her obviously injured wrist. That's assault.
Comment by Isaac on September 1, 2011 at 11:20am Since it's at a job, I probably would have Cool Story Bro'd her.
Comment by Isaac on September 1, 2011 at 12:11pm @Flower, when people say 'Cool Sotry Bro," it means that they are saying that they don't give a fuck.
Comment by Nick Dixon on September 1, 2011 at 12:44pm The trouble with having to deal with members of the public is putting up with all the abuse and learning to bite your tongue and smile instead. Volto sciolto and pensieri stretti - this is the way to deal with situations like this.
Comment by Arcus on September 1, 2011 at 1:56pm You work. Her children don't and might never do..
I'm glad I work in deep, deep back office, hidden from sight at a cost center. ;)
Comment by Samantha J. on September 1, 2011 at 4:00pm Read my post about my aunt. :P I have that every day. (Maybe you could respond with Happy Holidays just to pass your point across. xD)
Though I'd just ignore it, smile and nod, because chances are she won't complain to your boss for something like that. And @Flower, I agree whole-heartedly.
Comment by Hobert Church on September 1, 2011 at 6:30pm I have a similar story. I sometimes wear a Boondock Saints t-shirt with the McManus brothers on the front holding pistols and the words "Thy will be done" on the back. I walked into a McDonald's and an elderly gentleman walked in behind me and said, "Thy will be done....on Earth as it is in heaven! That's right, there, son! Asking for the lord's will to be done in your life is the best thing you can do!" I simply shrugged and said, "It's a quote from one of my favorite movies". Obviously, he had never even heard of the movie, and responded with a predictable, "It's in the holy scripture, too, son! God's word!" I just shrugged again, said "have a nice day" and walked to the bathroom. I didn't have to go, but I didn't want to get into an altercation in the middle of a McDonald's with a dude who was old enough to be my grandfather about matters of religion. So, I took the high road and turned the other cheek, so to speak. I would have preferred a nice hearty "Fuck you and your imaginary dictator", but I like McDonald's, and yelling at other patrons is a pretty good way to get yourself kicked out. Just thought I'd share. It happens to us all at one point, unfortunately.
