'I don't mind you saying you're an atheist'

I was having a conversation with a good friend about how a facebook friend insinuated my current unmoving flu was down to the fact I no longer have god on my side. I had forgotten the friend I was chatting to had himself dabbled in various community churches of the christian variety and he suddenly said,

'I don't mind you saying you’re an 'atheist''

To which I replied,

'I don't mind you saying you’re a 'christian''

Why to people think that we should be ashamed of our views that are based on logic and science when they are not ashamed of theirs that are based on fantasy and fairy stories?

Good question. But I think since we are not the norm, as we are outnumbered by the delusional, that we should feel this shame. It's not normal to think for yourself. It's not normal to enjoy life.

Maybe there is a hint of jealousy in their tone, no?

I totally agree with you, we shouldn't be afraid of saying we're an Atheist. I’ve actually been in a very simular situation. It’s like their saying we’re a second class citizen or something.

Maybe it's like the way people over react when they say something they think one of their minority friends might take as racist.
I think you should be more worried about the flu.

He is probably right about the flu thing though, maybe you should believe in God temporarily until the flu is gone.

Do you think it has something to do with majority vs. minority? Like, would you go up to a homosexual and say, "I don't mind you saying you're gay." Or, like what Misty said, have you ever been around someone who totally says something racist, but then is like, "No, it's cool, I have tons of black friends!"

It kinda feels like since he probably views himself as superior to you, he has to point out that your religion doesn't bother him. I don't know. Beats the fuck out of me.
