For the very first time in my life, I am actually ashamed to be American.

Despite the overt disgust churning in my stomach right now, I'm hesitant to write this.

It goes against everything I stand for. I'm American. I love my country. After traveling the world, I know this is an amazing place. I'm patriotic and political. I believe in change from within.

But then this.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/postpartisan/2010/12/child_marriag...

Rich House republicans in Washington would rather see little girls raped than even potentially give up an ounce of power they hold over a woman's body.

Please digest this for a moment.

These men that you and I have allowed to survive in office have publicly voted down a bill to protect children from forced marriage......based on a rumor they might open the door to overturn anti-choice laws.

D: I'm ashamed to live in America Almost every day. Did you know we're pretty low on the list of accepting evolution as fact?

There are third-world countries ahead of us on that list.

People who are currently in government are obsessed with control, power, wealth--and keeping it. The less education and basic rights we have--the easier it is to control us.

Also, here's the thing with pro-life people: A woman was recently put in jail for getting dizzy and falling down a set of stairs. Because the FETUS CELL BUNDLE in her uterus was more important by law, than she was. Nevermind she should be put on suicide watch first, if she was trying to kill herself that way, she was put in jail, and charged with fetus endangerment--when getting rid of the baby was not on her mind at all when she fell down the stairs. Best part? Nurse in the hospital she went to reported her, and she was arrested and taken from the hospital.

This is why I'd never have kids--unborn, a bundle of cells that throbs in time to music, something without feelings or memories or in-jokes with people--that is more important to these people than I will ever be. It makes me feel like cattle when you know what, women are people too!

I'm normally more restrained with my language, but EVERY SINGLE PERSON who voted against this, no doubt all (or mostly) Republican, are complete and utter callous cunts. Utterly unbelievable, and a country I admire, for it's Constitution & Bill of Rights, is today a country I am very glad I do not live in.

I became embarrassed to be American somewhere in the 90's. Now I'm just embarrassed to be human...and look forward to cleansing oblivion.

I travel to Africa a lot with my charity.. the effect of child marriage is gut-wrenching. Girls and women accept whatever is thrown at them, particularly by the west.. and I include the UK where I live in that statement. In Chad, there is a saying "A woman who is pregnant has one foot in the grave!" Practices which deal with pregnancy and childbirth were exported to Africa from the west but have now been shown to be harmful to mothers and babies are still being practiced in developing countries "because we were told that is how you do it in the west!" We now practice what African women were practicing generations ago. Obsteric Fistulas (damage to the reproductive and urinary tracts which cause continuous leakage of urine) are partly the result of young girls marrying before being fully developed and lack of care. If 550,000 men died every year or suffered emotional and physical damage, somebody would have doen something about it. I am appalled at this move by Republican Politicians.

Right. I'm seriously considering a published list of every fucking one of these house representatives. (The senate passed the bill without a single vote against it. It was the Republican majority HOUSE that killed it.)

I want names. I want addresses.

I want to publicly humiliate these people in every way possible.

If I were to get this info, would the TA community be willing to help me distribute it and sent a whole lot of hate mail their way?
