Perhaps, but not so long ago people were saying we'd never see a black person in the White House in our lifetime. I think it could happen in my lifetime. Granted, I'm young (22) but I'm not going to rule it out.

We've already had a TON of ugly presidents, Doug.
Remember the saying about Lincoln being 'two faced' and wearing a better looking one?
As for the rest, well..that wasn't a random thought. I was referencing the fact that though 'atheism' is ranked as the fastest growing self-identification category, it is still also polled as being one of the least trusted. Frustrating, considering there are less atheists in prison ranks than any other denomination, and even more so because...well...we just generally don't fly planes into buildings.
American public opinion.
No one said it had to make sense.

His image is literally one of the most circulated portraits on all of freakin' earth.
Hell, you can even use a fiver in Vietnam as legal currency.

Maybe you should replace your assertion for "we will never have an openly atheist president".

We've had atheist presidents before (Jefferson, Lincoln) but even though they were atheists, they still pulled the God card out when appealing to the masses. We'll never have a president that comes out and says "Look, I don't believe in God, so I'm never going to mention him ever. None of my decisions will be influenced by him, all of my policies will be based on fact and reason, and I will not pander to the faithful simply because there's more of them."

im not sure lincoln was an atheist....he was a deist i think.
