You'll likely all have heard this argument at some point. It's a classic.

Outlined rather well by http://www.godlessgeeks.com/LINKS/GodProof.htm, it goes something like this:
"(1) Person X, a well-known atheist, was morally inferior to the rest of us.
(2) Therefore, God exists."

It's just poetic, isn't it?

So... Assuming Hitler was an Atheist* - does this shed any light on the existence of God? Well, no.

There are a few separate points to address here, and I'll take them in turn.

If a bad person believes something, it is wrong because they are bad.

Imagine that no-one knew what water was made of, chemically. Then imagine an utter arsehole suggesting that hydrogen and oxygen played a part, and that he could prove it using reliable, empirical data.

Would the data - the real-world physical indicators of credibility - lose weight because the person presenting them was a bit of a dick? No. Those two things are as unrelated as a person's telephone number and hair colour - i.e one thing simply doesn't effect the other.

If you're unconvinced, consider the flip-side. If a really nice, charity donating, community supporting, Bible-bashing Christian attributed their honest nature to a sincere worship of what they imagine their God to be like, would it shed any light on the question of the existence of that God? Again, no - the same way that the entirely subjective cuteness of kittens doesn't either.

So, moving on... (Read more of this post)

Hitchens on the subject

Comment by kOrsan on February 25, 2013 at 2:54am

That argument is so fucking tired. The moment I hear someone say "Hitler was an atheist" they immediately plummet in my eyes. I would no longer even spit on them, that's how fucking pathetic it is at this point. It's like saying "the earth is flat" or "the pope is a muslim."

Don't even bother refuting it, they'll just stare at you like a bunch of cows who just heard thunder.

And it's not even the everyday birdbrain theists that use that argument. Even people like William Lane Crack use that argument. And he's suppose to be one of those mythical "educated theists" we all hear about with his fake ass diploma in the fairytale sciences of theosophy. That smegma-sniffing cum-gargling douchebag.

BLASPHEMY!!! YOU MUST BURN AT THE STAKE FOR YOUR SACRILEGE!!!  Sorry, I couldn't resist.

An uninformed opinion on the matter is still uninformed - no matter how intelligent or reasonable an individual might be.  People like that are best left alone unless or until they condemn you, their condemnation gives you permission to show them just how ridiculous they are.

I do my best to leave them alone but often they just won’t let it go, especially once they find out that I don’t believe in the god that they believe in. So I tell them all about the history of the Nazi party and its’ Christian “ethos”. Once they start that crap with me I will meet them head on and destroy their ill-informed concepts as they are doing their best to link fascism or Nazi atrocities with me or most of the people I know and respect. My fellow Atheists usually have a much higher standard of ethics and morals than almost all the Theists I know. So the piety and “holier than thou” attitude behind such statements from poorly educated theists will not wash with me. In fact I am quite the “fascist” myself when it comes do debunking the bullshit I get thrown at me from the flock.
I like to end my diatribe with the last sentence from Hitchens (praised be his name) here as it wipes away that smug look so quickly that it priceless to watch their faces change. AH, me on my own looking at 7 confused Theists trying to look unflustered…..bring it on. I am not even in second gear. Lol.

Faulty premise, Hitler was not an Atheist.

“I believe today that I am acting in the sense of the Almighty
Creator. By warding off the Jews I am fighting for the Lord’s work.”

Reg: Ah, Hitchens...

kOrsan: I can't stand Craig either, and I appreciate your ranting mate :P
He, like so many other extremely articulate Theists, resonates weirdly with me... Being young, I look up to people like Craig expecting some form of stereotypical age-driven wisdom, yet find nonsense - and so end up feeling kinda sorry for them...

You know, if you wrote a blog (or do write a blog that I haven't yet seen) I'd definitely read it...

Watchman: Far to many times... I'll try to remember some, thanks :)
I definitely have to read Mein Kampf at some point - I've heard it's a nice, incoherent glimpse into the mind of not-so-nice, incoherent madman.

Barry: Original :P

Aye. I like that you touch upon the essence of secularism there... That people are free to believe whatever they wish up until their beliefs are forced on others and/or used to try to legislate.

extremely articulate Theists

Stringing together random blurbs of big words is not being articulate, it's being pretentious. I can't stand his tone of voice either, it makes me want to beat him with a wet log.

You know, if you wrote a blog (or do write a blog that I haven't yet seen) I'd definitely read it...

Lol you're the first to ever say that. Much of that blog would look like what a lunatic would write on his walls in the asylum in blood. You're not missing out.

Reg: The superiority of Atheist morality (generally speaking) is certainly very real, and I'm glad you brought it up... I will definitely go into it in a later blog post :)

And on top of that, I'm glad to hear you defend reason with a smile mate - keep it up :P

kOrsan: I suppose that's open to opinion. I'd say that they are articulate, but sadly waste their language skills on, frankly, bullshit... Take Seth Andrews - he used to be a Christian radio broadcaster, but he now hosts a podcast called 'The Thinking Atheist'; produces free-thought videos; and runs the Thinking Atheist online community. He is an amazing speaker/story-teller, but I'm sure he could get his point across just as well when he was preaching as he does now promoting rationality and discussion :P

(I may be arguing just for the sake of it, mind you. It's a thing I like to do...)

I can sympathise with your hate of, simply, the tone of voice Craig uses though... It's the same with me and Ann Widdecombe. Grrr.

Oh, I think I am. Nice one matey, thanks for commenting :P

Marc: I do agree with you, just so you know.

I hope you're commenting ironically, or else you completely miss the point of the blog post.

If you think I am trying to perpetuate the very argument I am refuting, please read the blog post in full again (all of it).

That is all :P
