have you been threatened by a believer because of something you wrote?

Today, I received a "review" of a poem that I posted here a few days ago entitled "brief letter to a god defender"---this review was on another site, one that is supposed to be for writers specifically. the review follows.  i wanted to share with my fellow Atheist and was wondering what their own stories might be, for artists who have been threatened.

the "reviewer" wrote the following:

"My Golly Gosh!!!

I give you 2 stars only for your rotten guts to take on the majorities of this cruel corrupt world.
My spirituality is fine with my own convictions with out any God, and has nothing to do with you OK!!!.
I do not discriminate against anyone or anything, which you just did, alternatively may I say you questioned the choice of society. You could be in this poem the "fucking Paul Revere", running amok on an exceptional pleasant site " FanStory" and community with normal people's thoughts and convictions. Their human rights were not at all considered by you!

Hey cowboy!! Why do you not become transparent in your f......ng Profile and show us who you really are?? Personally I think you need desperate help from your: I quote: "your own personal hell?"

You should come to Africa and witness where some of the society will burn a fucking rubber tyre filled with gasoline around a person's neck, whilst he or she are alive!! What outcry will the non-heathen and or heathen society have then??

I review only worth while work and help novices where I can and give experienced writers credit where due. However this is you second outburst since I joined late in March this year.
I cautioned you previously in a review that it was an exceptional sensitive topic, but to no avail. It is easy for you to re- subscribe on this site as another literacy terrorist if you get banned now, which I hope you do!!

Be assured we will look out for your incriminating presence and let the authorities know straight away.

My conclusion to you is " It is you choice to be a non believer and remember others has a choice as well. There are not to many heathens in this world"
My kindest and best advice, is to ignore the ones you hate and not become your own enemy."

Well, I guess one of the chief purposes of art is to provoke an emotional response, so I guess this review is some measure of your success.  Why, this reviewer was so passionate in their response that they threw proper grammar and coherent thought right out the window in their haste to make their feelings known.  I suppose the other possibility is that they just don't know how to write in English and have no business critiquing work in a language they aren't comfortable with.

If I received a comment like this on my own work, I can't say it would really bother me.  It expresses no competent opinion on the writing itself and instead provides only self-indulgent drivel.  The tone of the review is useful in letting you know how it was received, but the content is meaningless.  I'd just leave it alone.

@Kris Feenstra.  Thanks for taking the time to read it man. : ) I agree with the "self-indulgent drivel" comment, etc.  I just wanted to know people's reactions, as it is in response to a poem that is relevant to the concerns of us who frequent this awesome website---i believe.  I know I'm not alone in this kind of treatment from a believer---that, is a great feeling.  Thanks again for the comment!

I agree with Kris. That person is just a nut case (which is the kindest I'll go... I have many other words to describe him/her).

@Peter.  I agree. : ) The illness is faith.  Thanks for taking the time to read it and comment!

If the review site is supposedly for writers, I'd expect a higher level of grammar skill than that person demonstrates. It's pretty typical for the standard raving nutter, though.

@Dave G.  Thanks for reading.  Somebody should compile "raving nutter" comments and make a book out of em', no? : )

Sheesh...erm, that is supposed to be a critical review? Someone needs to instruct that person about (a) spelling and grammar, and (b) how to write a constructive critique. *wincing*

To answer your question, have I received comments like the above-posted rant? Yes. I laugh at them...directly, and to their (virtual) faces. Usually pisses 'em off even more. Have I been personally threatened? No...not at this point. Though, given the nature of my research, I suspect that might well become a real-life possibility after my research is eventually published and when I transition into fieldwork. *sigh* Best wishes to you. :-)

No pro here but judging from words used in the review like "cowboy" and "Golly Gee Gosh" they are either from an early '90's cartoon or English is not their first language. Also judging by the form of grammatical errors namely in the use of "is/are" "have/has" and also in not using "your" but "you" when indicating possession though this isn't very consistent, this person is working from another grammatical structure that differs from English.

That being said, to attempt and critique a work in a language that you don't have a full grasp of is silly. Though people don't always realize just how badly they don't understand or don't get it.

BUT this is not a defense. The guy is a nut, you have every right to express yourself, and you ought to do so without being threatened like that. Hope you linked your poem to this thread.

I haven't been an atheist very long, and thus haven't had serious threats, but I have had some very condescending remarks over facebook. I do expect it to get more serious if and when I get more vocal about my beliefs and views especially in the political realm.

T Smith: *nodding* I picked up on that possibility, too. (Good eye!!)

As far as seriousness in facebook? *grin* If you'd like, I'll happily route you to a few like-minded folks who will probably double you over in laughter at how they approach religion & politics in open discourse (a few VERY different ways)...and having them as moral support is truly helpful when dealing with some of the more -aggressive?- religious folks who troll people's walls. :-)

@Denise W.  Thanks for taking the time to read this. : ) I agree with you in your assessment of it.  I have muted the individual from commenting on my work now---hopefully this will be the end of it.  On the downside, my post "On Freedom of Speech II," was censored from the site---which in a way, allowed this individual some satisfaction.  I hope the best with you and your own research!  I am curious as to what it is about.
