From FB: Taking my own advice is hard :(

I should really start taking my own advice. Here's a response I wrote on an article about debating with creationists:

"You can't debate these people. For a start they don't even know how to frame a rational argument, so the very foundation of debate is missing. They are also incapable of critical thinking, or merely entertaining the notion that they may be wrong. It's a waste of time. Use them for target practice (metaphorically of course) if you must, but don't expect a satisfying exchange."

Why did I forget this? Because sometimes you really like the person, and it pains you to see them wallowing in abject ignorance.

The difference between him and me is this. Give me positive proof and I'll happily admit I was wrong. Prove to me that the Judeo-Christian God of the bible does exist after all, I'll eat MOST of my words. Then I'll go pray, if that's what it takes to talk to it. And when I do I will call that god a childish spoiled c*nt. So burn me you little shit. Do your worst, because even if someone proved you existed, you'll never hear a single word of praise from me.

The first one is a very rash generalization that simply isn't true, and the second, while somewhat still a harsh generalization is made alright by the 'or'. Basically, I've run into creationists who have a more solid grasp on logic than I myself and is capable of critical thought, but is entirely blind to anything other than what he believes to be true. I'm getting a more solid footing on logic and critical thinking, just had him throw me through a loop a couple of times and I realized I had been out of it too long. Though I know debate won't go anywhere cause like I said "he's blind to blah blah blah" but I know he has potential... More than potential, the guy is freakin' brilliant but he needs to allow his mind to be free of certain binds.
