"I take it all for myth from start to finish, with probably some faint relation to historical reality. They're great stories. But for people to take texts as something sacred, handed down from God... that's pretty backward, I think."
That is a
quote from R. Crumb talking about the bible, and he has decided to put out his comic book version of Genesis anyway. Crumb is the creator of the sexually explicit underground comic
Fritz the Cat, which was eventually turned in to the first X-rated cartoon movie. He's also famous for the "Keep on Truckin'" images that made in on to so many T-shirts and other items decades ago.
He is keeping up his reputation with his this cartoon book, called
The Book of Genesis Illustratred. It carries the warning "adult supervision recommended for minors." It has sexually explict images and lots and lots of nudity protrayed within its pages.
From the story linked above:
"It is turning the Bible into titillation," said Mike Judge, of the Christian Institute, a religious think-tank. "It seems wholly inappropriate for what is essentially God's rescue plan for mankind."
(Images of Chapter 1 can be found
here, but I don't know how long they'll be up if copyright issues get them taken down at some point.)
Crumb's website has the book for sale, as does Amazon and others.
The
Washington Post also has a review.
