On March 9, 2009 the crazed Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) set their sights on the University of Chicago. In customary WBC fashion, the members displayed god related hate speech with unabashed delight. The event took on almost a festive atmosphere as counter protesters refused to take the fundamentalist wack-jobs seriously. Unwilling to go unnoticed amongst the roasting marshmallows and clever signs, the Chicago Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi launched a protest that made me nearly wee my pants.

This fraternity didn’t break any stereotypes about the kinds of people that join up but they did show that a fraternal brotherhood can go deeper than keggers and rogue bodily fluids. The Chicago protest proved that a good old fashioned glee fest works better to deflate the nutters than screaming back ever could.
