What is the point of intellect?
People spend money at institutions
To be taught by teachers
Of the best quality,
To learn the things
That will make them leaders in society.
People forget what they learn
In favor of what they are told by others
And what sounds more comforting.
People forget the science of centuries
And think that the Earth is six thousand years old,
That dinosaurs and man co-existed,
That a flood occurred that covered the world,
And that the Earth is the center of the Solar System.
People tell them, “This is the truth!”
And they obediently agree.
They ignore the obvious evidence
For the word of another
Or the text of an old book.
Darwin never sailed on the Beagle,
Copernicus never wrote
“De revolutionibus orbium coelestium,”
Galileo Galiei never challenged the church,
Achimedes never bothered to think,
And Socrates never bothered to question.
