So reading a few posts made by friends on Facebook, I came across this:
Then, a few responses down:
Shit!! What the fuck did the japanese do to piss god or whatever u wanna say off?
Seriously? There has been mass destruction, thousands dead, and even more without their homes and all you have to say is "who pissed off god?" (She goes on to say it was probably just karma. I didn't know Jesus believed in karma!)
I feel that these comments bring even more ignorance into the conversation. The people then begin to talk about how we should all start praying because these earthquake/tsunami/nuclear fears/volcano events are all god "saying" we should pray more. One person also states "I pray it doesn't happen to us." So, what if it does? Is that god not answering your prayers? Or maybe it is god saying that we're all doomed for hell. Insinuating that god did this as way to punish Japan also insinuates (to me, at least) that the people who died are going to hell for eternal punishment.
The ignorance continues after someone mentions the "super moon" theory:
i heard about that!! "super moon" its been that close recently but not in "full moon mode" so... its scary.. from the 19th to the 22nd is supposed to be the peak period.. i think people need to start prayin a little more and being crappy a little less cuz God's saying GET IT TOGETHER PEOPLE lol
This confuses me. How can you speak of a scientific theory and then say that we need to pray more? Do they believe that god is causing the moon to become closer to the Earth, not its own orbital path?
On another note, Japan is now estimated to be 8 feet closer to the United States. Wouldn't this give more evidence towards the Pangaea Theory? Over long periods of time, natural activities on Earth slowly moved the continents apart. Could it be that the continents are working their way back together again?

Comment by greengeekgirl on March 15, 2011 at 4:45pm Stuff like this makes my teeth itch. What I don't get is--why on earth would you love and worship a deity that is so cruel? Who gives us a choice and then punishes us so severely for choosing the wrong thing? If it were true, we would all be in therapy to battle this dysfunctional relationship.
Re: the "super moon" theory, maybe they think the "super moon" is God changing around things in the universe to punish us.. ha.

That is something I cannot fathom. When I was a Christian, I only knew what I was told in church and by family. When you really get down to the dirty parts in the Bible, it is utterly unbelievable. I could not worship a god that give eternal punishment for simple acts. I surely wouldn't worship a deity who would take the lives of others in place of those who deserve the punishment.
@Richmond- I agree with you that Christians treat their god as an abusive parent. If a person was to commit the same acts seen in the Bible, there would be uproar from the Christian community condemning that person to hell.
There's just way too many contradictions in any religion.
