Since the fear of death is the most primal fear that humans have, I have always thought that the major impetus for believing in Christianity and Islam, is that it helps to mollify this fear. If you have ever been in, or seen someone in, a full phobia induced panic attack, you know that reason and logic are worthless in alleviating that panic. May not, this explain the intractability of belief in the afterlife? Being an atheist I know that death is oblivion, and since I will not know anything after death, it holds no threat and I harbor no fear.

I tend to think that belief in an afterlife stems from some sense of emptiness in life. Religion surely doesn't adhere to a life full of love, joy, and accomplishment. Believing that a god must be in another imaginable realm, that some people think is reachable, has to fill some void that reality never does.

I agree with you Doug. As I am an atheist too, I believe that death is oblivion and I too don't fear the idea of death. And I agree with Mark as well. That it does fill some void that reality never does. I mean, persons are smart and people are stupid. Everyone wants to believe in life after death and seeing their loved ones again, and I can see why and don't blame them. But like most agnostic atheist as myself, there is just no scientific proof or logic thinking that life could really think exist after death. But I guess I'll find out someday right? ; )

Actually, you probably won't, the very instant you will be given that information is the very instant you will cease to exist.

True. But let me ask you a question I find asking myself sometimes. As you and me are both atheists, Would like there to be an afterlife? Heaven or something similar to it?

Hell, no! I can't imagine doing anything for eternity. Just doing everything I'd like to; would only take a few centuries!
