My mother is furious with me.
This is due to my attempts to have a discussion with her about religion. Most people are like that. I haven't met a person off of the internet (or not an atheist on the internet) who is willing to even touch the subject. How dare I try to mention that religion may be harmful! How dare I point out flaws such as the harmful impacts of superstition or indoctrination of children? How DARE I say that logical interpretations of a situation along with logical reactions may be more beneficial than just saying "faeries did it" and proceeding to ignore said problem. No, this makes me a tyrant. This is me trying to "impose my beliefs on others". That i am indoctrinating just as i say not to do. Yes, I am indoctrinating when i say it is illogical to believe something without rational reason to. I am indoctrinating when i say it is better to attempt an understanding of a subject.
A while ago I was having my mother tell me that I had no greater knowledge of the subjects such as evolution and religion than she did. That I had no greater resources than she did. That I (who have spent countless days and months and years studying such subjects) could not possibly have an understanding CLOSE to hers, due to my age. Although today i managed to bring up a couple words out of her mouth about her actual beliefs (which is difficult to do) and it turns out she did not believe that we are related to other apes because there are no "living links". This alone shows an obvious and serious lack of knowledge as far as evolution is concerned. After presenting her with fossil records, dating methods, and how they all correlate, I asked my mother if her opinions had changed. She refused to respond and proceeded to become even more angered by the subject. After she accused me of believing that i am god, i decided it was futile to carry on.
This is an important subject, but to most people discussing it is like raping babies and committing a holocaust combined.
I love it when they tell me that I'm worse than Hitler because i wish to promote scientific understanding over superstitious explanations, or that religious people should not be given rights over non religious people.
